Kat Terrell dug up old quotes from Loomis from 2004. Ouch

quote:

"I think we’re on the right track," Loomis said ... on New Year’s Day. "The easiest thing to do is to say, ‘OK, we didn’t do what we’re supposed to do, let’s blow the whole thing up and start all over.’

"That would be the easiest thing to do. But I don’t think that’s the right thing to do. The right thing to do is to stay the course. Often times that is the hardest thing to do. But I think that’s what we need to do."

So what's interesting is that then the team went 2-3 and Loomis and Benson both criticized them. Loomis said "Ultimately, we all are judged by wins and losses," Loomis said. "If we can't work it out, then changes have to be made. And I'm not afraid to make them. That's my job"

The next month the Saints lose 34-13 and Tom Benson said they looked like high school kids: "That's the worst performance I've seen from our club in my 20 years of owning them."

So Haslett gets retained for the 2005 season and says this: "What hurt was the criticism we received within the building, " Haslett said. "To get criticized early in the season by the general manager, I think that affected me some and I think it affected our football players."

Fast forward 20 years and this what he said about Dennis Allen in January: "So I think the easy thing to do is just look at the results and say, 'Oh no, we've got to have a change.' You got to look beyond that," Loomis said. "What are the reasons why we were 9-8 instead of 13-4?

Loomis from January: "... I think sometimes the hard thing to do is to be patient and recognize your other shortcomings and get those fixed, and that's what we're doing."

I think Kat is about to get frozen out

Nice to see a NOLA sports journalist doing her job rather than what the rest of them do

Management and Ownership both with the Saints and Pelicans are very Poor.

The branding and marketing you need to do in a small market to compete with the National Market and how to run a team is being done years and years behind what they should actually be.

The Saints are hanging their hats on 2009 (its 16 years later almost)

The Pelicans have not had a turn in the "right direction" since they changed their name to the Pelicans. The Peak of the franchise was when CP3 was there, then he began the trend of realizing you cannot build you brand/market correctly while in NOLA. So other guys like AD followed, and Zion will do so (unless he continues to ruin his potential).

As someone who lives in the state of Louisiana, just want something to hang our hats on and be proud of. Stop slapping some "flex seal" on these situations and feeding fan bases crap.

Fix it please....Definitely begins with Ownership.

What stood out to me was Tom's comments, criticizing the team and saying they looked like HS kids and what a terrible performance it was.

It forced Loomis into taking positions he didn't want to take.

No ownership now so Loomis does nothing

The team is making money. Everyone is getting paid. There is no impetus to shake things up.

Sure it’s better to win, but if you lose there is always next year.

The "We've done some things that are positive, and yet the negative plays are keeping us from having success" crap spewing from DA yesterday sounds exactly like something Haslett would have said 20 years ago.

I've been thinking for a long time the whole DA thing eerily parallels Haslett's tenure. The smug demeanor while being so inept while gaslighting to the media/public. But that quote right there is right out of 2002-2004.

Haslett won a playoff game.

Dennis Allen hasn't even been to the playoffs in 6 years of being a HC

I think this one is pretty easy to diagnose. In 2004 Loomis was only two seasons into his job as General Manager. He had to perform. Fast forward to now, he's been in his role for twenty two years and I don't necessarily say there's no expectation to perform, but he now has complete and utter trust from Gayle Benson. She would trust Loomis to catch her if she jumped from top of the Dome. The issue is she doesn't know any better, she will believe whatever he tells her. So because of that, Loomis has been able to put his buddy Dennis Allen ahead of the organization, to the detriment of the franchise, and he will give him every opportunity to prove that he, Loomis, made the right choice in hiring him.

This is honestly the best work she has done covering the team. Not a shot at her other work, but props to her for following through on this.

We need to get Loomis's cell phone number to Yeah I'm Live. Daily calls from that mfer would get the ball rolling.

This was right after the 2003 season when the Saints got eliminated after Carney missed kick.

In 2004 Saints missed out on playoffs due to some garbage tiebreaker. 3-way tie between Rams, Seahawks and Saints. Haslett was upset on metrics they used to pick 2 teams.

And that concludes todays history lesson

Worst thing that ever happened to the Saints

They used that as an excuse to keep that idiot around for the next 4 playoff-less seasons.

And he ‘won’ a playoff game because a Rams player muffed a punt.

It was the best thing, because if Haslett is fired earlier you have no idea if they hire Payton and get Brees. Probably doesn't happen, and we are probably still a shite franchise with 1 playoff win 20+ years later

This tweet in the thread to me is more indicative of what's going on - I just don't see them firing him mid year and honestly don't see the point. We are not very good and its going to be a full reset - at what benefit does bashing him publicly help.

I agree with everyone DA has to go, Loomis throwing him under the bus now when they won't fire him till end of year does nothing but make a few of us happy until we take the field again and crap the bed.

Going to be an interesting end of the season

I agree the Saints will not fire a HC mid season but the one glaring benefit I see is it would be a golden opportunity to promote Darren Rizzi to interim-HC and get him some exposure. Dude is one of those guys that could excall as HC on his fire and motivation skills alone. Add to that that he's a well liked and respected coach by peers and players alike. Maybe is spring boards him into a HC role somewhere. It couldn't be here though because the fans would burn the superdome down if they made another internal hire.

I am with you on Rizzi but I think this is going to be a complete reset fresh start and he wouldn't be in the mix for that reason.
