washing machine and dryer recommendation

We want to get a new washing machine/dryer set. The first step is to decide on the brand name. There are many manufactures making these appliances. I want to ask everyone what is your brand and would you buy the same brand again? Would you recommend it to others? Thanks in advance.

Cheapest ones. Trust me.

Agree with Speed Queen. Expensive but sturdy and controls you can understand. And they have overrides built in so you can get more than government says they want you to use

Aside from the speed queen, is there any other Maytag, ge, whirlpool, etc that's an old school agitator/NON high efficiency washer?

I just divorced mine. Let me know where you find a good selection to choose from

I've heard Speed Queens are good but they don't make very large ones from what I can tell - I have a big family so I've gone with the biggest washer/dryer I can find. Now-a-days there really isn't much of a difference in quality between most of the brands. I had a Whirlpool with the impeller previously - that one wasn't very good, I have a LG with an agitator now - that one seems better.

If you’re wanting to buy brand new from a box store, a top loading GE or Whirlpool washer and dryer in the $500-a-piece range, with the manual knobs and timers on the panel, and make sure the washer has an agitator. I don’t care what they say, an agitator just washes better.
I’ve used Speed Queen before and they look good and seem reliable, but pricey. I would go with the GE or Whirlpool I mentioned above just based on price & longevity.
That said, me personally? I would look to buy a used GE or Whirlpool for cheap online somewhere. You can find machines in great shape from nice homes all the time online and if they’re 10 years old or more you’ll get a great machine that would probably service you for another 15 years. They don’t make them like they used to anymore.

Speed Queen: I've had a pair since the 2016 flood, and they've seen heavy use each week since. The only service to them has been one of the two circuit breakers that feed the dryer went out (not the dryer), and a circuit board in the washer had to be replaced last month. It might be kinky, but that solid metal THUNK when its transmission does its thing makes me think this combo will be with me for awhile.

So do you like your speed queen? How much to fix it?

I did not buy into the speed queen BS but my wife wanted it so I got one. Clean clothes and fast as shite.
I bought the largest gas dryer I could find. Also fast and awesome.

The wash time more than makes up for the size difference. It'll do twice as many loads as the eco friendly competition.
The dryer I'm not crazy about, we've had to call them out bc it just kept running and the towels smelled burnt. And a year later it's doing it again.
But I suspect it's bc my wife turns the dial the wrong way.

I've been using a heavy-duty pair of Speed Queens for the last 4 or 5 years. No issues whatsoever.

Get the one with the least bells and whistles. Fewer things to go wrong

Speed Queen.
If you can't afford them, Maytag Commerical are a good alternative.

I just bought a set of the mid tier speed queen.
Low end has that springy washer tub shite with a direct drive. Has knobs
Mid tier has a belt and drum and giant transmission and drum. Knobs.
Top tier is digital shite I didn't want.
So fat I can wash a load of clothes regular cycle in 21 minutes. Deep full tub in like 30 minutes. Holds a ton.
Dryer is nice and the clothes feel really clean. Like my parents old basic Kenmore with the brown knobs clean.
They were expensive but everything is easy to get to and comes with a 5 years parts and labor in home and I think a 10 year transmission.
I enjoy washing clothes now as we can knock it out so quick. After a month it's proven well worth it.
Family of 5 and active in sports and outdoors. Lots of washing.
