Brian Kelly had a plan for NIL

The man is smart. While everyone else is falling all over themselves to pay millions to untested, entitled 18 year old kids in the transfer portal, Kelly says 'LSU will focus on developing high school talent'.
So all over college football, you see teams getting worse as the year goes on as discipline issues and entitlement take over locker rooms. You also see an LSU team getting a little better each week, as old school coaching takes effect.
"We will develop you, we will get you ready for the next step as we did with Jayden Daniels, as we did with Malik Nabers, as we did with Brian Thomas," Kelly said. "We developed three defensive linemen that all got drafted this year. We'll do that again. But if you're just looking to get paid, you're looking in the wrong place."

A lot of good guys and good leadership on this team

Focusing on in state talent has been huge as well. Get the best guys in Louisiana and say play for the home team. Then fill gaps with the portal

And with the luster coming off of Alabama, this should become easier. If someone cares more about the money, or otherwise has reason to leave the state for a new environment, godspeed. For everyone else, build the fence.

You have to be able to give the athlete something. Some schools can only give them money. BK has decided that he is going to go the opposite direction and get the kids that want to put in the training and get better.
Clearly our kids are going to get NIL, but BK is putting more value in the actual training that the kids will get as his selling point. Overall I think it’s a great strategy, just have to get the kids to buy in.
Will we miss on some “big name” kids? Probably. With his approach will we also be a more complete a cohesive team? Also, probably.

I'm definitely on BK side in this. He couldve gone for more instant gratification like FSU, we're not there yet talent wise but we're definitely getting there and after this class gets here with a few portal guys we will be ready to roll with talent and a culture that's been built by him, not with a group of players that were mercenaries. He made mistakes when he got here like the defensive staff but this wasn't one of them.

I think that’s the right approach
Build through recruitment, use NIL for player retention and then supplement areas of need via the portal.
That’s how you build a cohesive program that is consistent and sustainable
Otherwise you are Ole Miss

This team is winning in spite of Kelly and would be undefeated if he didn’t start coaching scared against USC.
Nuss is excelling at the QB position and was at LSU before Kelly showed up. Durham should’ve been starting and getting the majority of the carries day 1. Another Kelly mistake.
Perkins being away from the defense now and the defense gelling and playing much better is no coincidence. Weeks is shining. Handling of Perkins is another Kelly mistake and a huge one.

LSU has also been on board with paying players that earn it after they get here

This makes no sense. Most of the transfer portal big gainers are experienced players from lower level schools looking to take a step up in competition.

Bingo. And Kelly and LSU have done a hell of a job of this.

This team isn’t winning in spite of Kelly. What an idiotic statement. And how many practices have you made this year. You have no clue who was doing what the first few weeks of practice. And USC had a huge advantage with the elevation and time zone change of that game. Not to mention new OC, new DC and lots of freshmen playing. But then you’ve never coached either so take your BK hate and stick it where the sun doesn’t shine. He’s building a championship program which you know nothing about.

Do yall seriously think that the recruits aren’t receiving huge sums of cash while still HS students? Look I like Kelly but no one is going to keep kids out of the portal. Playing time, cash, coach turnover, development. But something will trigger it.

I think you got the wrong dude in your reply

quote:Absolutely and he has been clear about this from the beginning. It’s becoming increasingly clear that Kelly’s approach is the right approach in this new era. I think we’ll probably have a few more years of the Wild West NIL era but it will probably settle down, especially as it becomes clear that mercenary teams don’t win championships. Whether it’s done with high school players (A&M) or transfers (Ole Miss).

Nuss development is pretty remarkable. LSU will have talent at QB position years to come. Others players will commit because of that.

It’s becoming really clear that paying huge NIL for freshman is a bad idea because they just leave if they don’t start year 1. Give guys some spending money but don’t break the bank. Much better to use $800,000 of NIL to get 2-3 good guys with 2 years of eligibility left at areas of need for competition than to drop $800k on a single guy for one year. Preserves team chemistry. BK has figured this out.

quote:If Perkins doesn’t get hurt Kelly would still be trying to place the square peg in the round hole with him and he would’ve never benched him. Nuss ability forced Kelly to not play conservative. Durhams ability is forcing him to play him as a true freshman. All things most of the rant knew.
Hot take. This team is getting better every week. You think that’s just happening organically?
