The past several days I’ve had the same three dogs running deer on my place. I have trail camera photos of them and have seen them chasing deer. I know the owner and spoke with them about the dogs being on my place.

The promised to put them up but have yet to do so.

I love dogs, but when you’ve invested your time, sweat and money into creating a place for your family to hunt, it’s really frustrating watching this happen.

I know this has been discussed countless times here, but I’m not sure what to do. I don’t want to be a bad neighbor and I don’t want to start a conflict over it, but damn it’s frustrating.

Lastly, if I gun hunted I probably wouldn’t be as upset but trying to bow hunt with dogs running is tough.

Any ideas?

It’s been over 20 years ago a guy up the road had a pack of part Beagles he let run loose. They were constantly running deer and coyotes all over my and neighbors property, day and night..Every day I hunted I would hear them, occasionally I would see them but I never got a shot at them.Very frustrating.

Suddenly they all disappeared.Talking to a neighbor about what happened to all those dogs.
He told me he wired about a dozen Conibear 330 beaver traps to trees about knee high, baited them with pieces of sausage. If you’re familiar with those traps it’s instant death.

Sounds harsh but sometimes you have to do what you have to do.
I would have never thought about doing that,I didn’t have any of those traps anyway but the neighbor did because beavers would dam up a creek that passed through their property and flood their trees.

Anyway,I was glad they were all gone and I feel it was better than poison which was about the only other option.

We had the same issue back in the late nineties on a small deer lease (200 acres). Being dog owners, we weren’t going to eradicate them so we kept them fat and lazy. If you know the general area they’re entering your property, dump a 50 lb bag of Ol Roy or other cheap dog food at the property line when you arrive and they’ll gorge themselves and lay around instead of chasing critters. Guarantee you’ll have peaceful hunts again.

Anybody that would kill somebody's dog over deer hunting is a certifiable scumbag that also should be put down in the same manner they used on the dog. Deer hunting is just not that important.

I can't tell you how many times I've tracked deer with my dogs and bump deer off the same corn pile my dogs were just standing and pottying next to as we're walking out the woods.

People seem to forget that coyotes coexisting with deer are a thing.

Apples and oranges.

One is a wild animal, the other isn’t.

Again, if I were gun hunting I’d have little to no problem with it, but being a bow hunter it makes it kinda difficult.

I bought a piece of property and have spent the last two years thinning timber, putting in food plots, buying seed, fertilizer, diesel, running trail cameras and trying to create a place where our family can enjoy the work and sweet we put in.

I’m not a dog killer and even grew up hunting behind dogs on the river, but when I’m told the dogs will be put up only to keep seeing them chase deer out of my plots, it gets upsetting.

I’m just asking for solutions.

Maybe try a hot wire around the food plot or near the neighbors fence line?

I think you have your scumbags backwards but that's just me.

The property I was referring to and where I live now was my grandfathers farm.
When I was a kid and grandparents were alive everyone around had a yard dog,I mean a fence where the dog stayed.Dogs were not allowed to run free.
Any dog running loose got shot. That’s the way it was, people, didn’t tolerate it then and no reason they should now.

The real scumbags are dog owners that let their dogs run free and ruin other peoples enjoyment of their property, chase and/ or kill their animals.Dogs that run loose are in danger of getting run over by cars,I see a dead dog on the highway at least every week.Another thing these days is coyotes will sometimes kill a dog.

Responsible dog owners keep their dogs on their property.

Spend thousands of dollars and enormous amounts of time on your lease/propeety only to have it fricked up by assholes letting their dogs run the deer then get back to us.

It’s very frustrating. I have never shot a dog from my stand but wanted too.

I've got a pack of wild dogs roaming my woods, get picks on camera every once in awhile but never seen them in person. I don't think they are anybody's pets as they look mean and ratty

I feel like there’s some kind of misconception that you’re talking about gunning down the neighborhood bernadoodle who just happened to get out of the yard when this topic comes up. All of the dogs I’ve had problems with have been half-wild, starving, and uncared for by whatever idiot that claims them and lets them run wild. Not much difference between that type and a yote, in my opinion.

The scumbags are the people who don't tend to their responsibilities. I have not shot a dog on my property, but if it became a recurring issue I certainly would. Time is the most valuable resource. Many hunters put plenty of time to improve their land and many have so little time to hunt and enjoy it. If a neighbor shirks his responsibility and continues to wast my time, then frick him and his dogs.
