I have not car shopped with any seriousness since 2008.

A. Are hybrid engines trustworthy or not really? They were from outer space in 2008.

B. Looking at Acura TL or Honda accord sized cars. Beside Camrys what else should I look toward? What’s new in the last 16 years?

Last purchase I took my time and enjoyed. This is just a purchase to get Point A to B.

Don’t want a POS but don’t need a BMW or Benz.

Acura makes great cars. They are rolling out the ADX , an entry level luxury level SUV that sits below the RDX next year and I think it will be to SUV’s what the Integra is to sedans.

The Integra S is a fun as hell car to drive, FTR. Go check out the Integra when you are checking out the Camry and Accord . All good choices and the sales numbers reflect that.

Get another Acura TL

You can get a great deal on one from the late teens in the 60-80k range and it’ll easily last 10 years

Camry and Accord is hard to beat, but they won't be the cheapest.

The Malibu and Altima will be good alternatives. They are older designs than the Camry but they are perfectly fine if you don't neglect your vehicles. The Altima's CVT issues seem to be worked out, and this generation Malibu has actually been a solid, comfortable car.

If you can deal with a smaller car, the Jetta, Civic, and Corolla are good. But you may actually pay less for a larger Altima or Malibu.

The Accord uses a CVT, but not Acura. Subaru and Honda have been okay with CVTs. Not great, but not any worse than their in-house developed traditional automatics.

Nissan is the one that had the big issues in the past. The newer ones are fine, but you cannot neglect to flush the transmission out every 50,000 miles.

Toyota uses an e-CVT, which has a stepped first gear, but then it switches to a variable setup afterward. That reduces stress on the CVT belts/pulleys. I've heard nothing but good things about Toyota's e-CVT setup although it's known for contributing to a boring drive.

The Civic is objectively the shite. One of the best entry level mass- produced cars ever. They are even relatively easy on the eyes these days.

It's a great car, but it's a hard sell if you can get a much larger Altima or Malibu for less and actually need the space.

But yeah...Civic is hands down the best compact car you can get right now. This generation and the previous generation have been fantastic. Love the styling too.

Overheating. My mind immediately went to worst case scenarios.

$550 later I’m out of the new car market for now.

Thanks for the serious replies.
