New York CNN — Walgreens is closing approximately 1,200 locations as the drug store chain struggles to contend with online competitors and declining prescription drug payments.

By 2027, about one in seven Walgreens currently open will close its doors. About 500 Walgreens will close its doors over the next year, the drug store chain announced Tuesday.

Those closures represent a significant escalation from a few months ago, when the financially struggling company announced in June it was shutting 300 underperforming locations as part of a multi-year optimization program under CEO Tim Wentworth. At the time, the company had said about a quarter of Walgreens stores were unprofitable, and the chain promised “imminent” changes.

Still, the company managed to post stronger-than-expected sales in the past quarter. Revenue at the chain rose 6% from the same quarter a year ago, but Walgreens reported a $3 billion loss largely because of a writedown of a Chinese pharmaceutical chain and a home care provider called CareCitrix.

The latest tranche of closures is “emblematic of a company that is in trouble and is trying to course correct,” according to Neil Saunders, retail analyst and managing director at GlobalData Retail.

“Walgreens spent years building its business through acquisitions and neglected the fundamentals of its stores and its retail operations,” he told CNN. “That has pushed a lot of outlets into a position where they are losing sales and are not generating a return.”

So we spent the last 20 years building up every corner with a Rite-Aid, Walgreen's, and CVS; now, two of the three are going to be empty.

The two locations by us struggle with getting employees. Prices for non prescription stuff are stupid high.

They could easily merge these two locations and come out better.

IDK how much is hiding in the books on this, but when they went extremely woke a couple of years back, I dropped them. They went from reasonably competent, courteous techs at pharmacy to clearly incompetent techs who checked boxes over the span of a year. I wasn't the only one in my area who noticed, and a lot of people who had insurance alternatives made the switch too.

They've already closed 2/3 stores in my area. Now, the one that's open is jampacked morning to night & the employees are completely overwhelmed & bitchy as hell.

I’ll take two less stores per mile if it means they have decent hours and are fully staffed.

I’m in the process of transferring over my prescriptions from them because service and hours have gotten so bad.

I went local pharmacy from Walgreens a few years ago. They close early on Saturday and are closed on Sunday but the staff knows who the hell I am and knows the staff at my Dr’s offices. If there is a problem we all work it out.

National chains can’t offer that type of connection. As far as OTC and retail stuff the Dollar General(a clean one) is a way better stop.

Growing up their was K&B on the corner, eventually Rite Aid bought them out. Walgreen's then bought that store from Rite Aid, just to close it. A month later closed one of their 2 stores in the area.

the way they build all these stores makes it next to impossible to use that space for anything new

the empty space by Towne Center has been like that for a few years now
talk about a waste of space

Guess that means CVS has finally won the drugstore wars, right?

quote:

CVS Health has closed 851 stores nationwide as it works toward its goal of closing 900 locations, the company said Wednesday.

During a webcast reviewing the company’s second-quarter earnings. President & CEO Karen Lynch provided the updated figure for the number of stores closed. The company originally announced in November 2021 that it would realign its retail footprint and eliminate 300 locations a year for three years.

Even in their death throes it appears Walgreens and CVS will be duking it out.

Screw them and their shitty Pharmacy techs.
I get my prescriptions from a small local place, but my wife and daughter will sometimes have a prescription at Walgreens.
