What were some of the techniques you would use when you got the craving for the sauce?

Allen Carr's "Quit Drinking without Willpower"
Saw this recommended on the OT, it's not as easy as it sounds but it's definitely doable.

Be careful doing this man. Not sure how much you drank before. For real be careful. Better to medically detox. I have seen people have seizures.

How much you drinking?

I had a buddy who was crushing 4 bourbon doubles a night who went cold turkey. He quit sleeping for almost 10 weeks and it about killed him.
Booze is bad (I drink nightly), but maybe get some professional help if you’ve passed a certain intake.
Oh, he also quit sugar and bread at the same time.

If you're a hard drinker, get help. I lost a friend to alcohol. Attempting to quit finished him off.

Started working out. It's not easy, little over a year and a half now and one of the best decisions I've made.

I used to drink daily. I still drink, but I take long breaks these days. I find as long as I have a beverage to sip on, I'm good. It's mostly plain sparkling water with a splash of bitters. Other times it's lemonade.

Being present in my young children’s increasingly active lives was a big motivator for me.

Drink cold Pelligrino at the times you feel the urge to have a drink. It works.

Sleep is tricky and a common reason people go back to drinking. I had the same struggle. I had a Dr prescribe me trazedone and it helped. It will still be a struggle some nights but it does go away eventually

Working out (sweat) and going to bed early.
ETA: you can take antibuse. If you drink while on it, you get sick.

Depending on how much you drank you may be fine cold turkey or you may need to taper it.
Drink lots of water. Exercise. Get outside. Sweets can help short term for cravings.
The first ~7-10 days usually the hardest from wanting to drink again. After that it drops off a lot and usually a lot easier.

Did y’all hear about the school bus that got hit by a beer truck?
No injuries. It was light beer

Yeah, if you've been a heavy daily drinker, or even a binge drinker, I'm not sure that cold turkey is the way to do it without some medical supervision.
But if you go the medical route it's forever on your record and that has its own serious consequences over time.
The way to do it, if you are able, is to taper off over time while replacing your dependency with other stuff .... workouts, hobbies, flavored fluids, etc.
If you experience the shakes, Blazing Saddles style, you're doing it wrong.

cold sparkling water and Peychaud's
the first week will be the worst and you'll wake up a lot thru the night
exercise and take melatonin or unisom
or get some low power gummies
if you can make it a week, you can do it. But the hard part for me was the social situations where everyone is porch drinking till 1am and cutting up. You just have to excuse yourself and go to bed. Focus on the tomorrow and everything you want to accomplish and the feeling of having it all done. Staying focused on the tomorrow instead of the right now was important for me.
