What coach worth anything would accept our roster/cap situation?

Legit question. If we "clean house" in terms of the coaching staff, who is going to accept the job that will be a 4-5 year rebuild?

We are at the point where we may have to start extending guys who are done like Davis, just as we did Cam this offseason, for cap/void year purposes.

We just stupidly kicked can with Carr's contract, which makes cutting him difficult and we may need to restructure his salary this offseason, and possibly extend him, for cap purposes.

We don't have much young talent. We're in the middle of the oldest rosters in the NFL.

The saints pay well for coaches and are loyal, even if to a fault. That will be attractive.

We also have significant cap space in 2026 and 27. Enough to eat into to get under in 25 and still have room.

NFL jobs will always be in high demand. Coaches are chomping at the bit to

1) prove themselves at the pinnacle of their profession
2) make a boatload of money

Half the jobs every cycle have meddling owners, bad quarterbacks, etc. they still get filled by decent candidates

Ben Johnson may not. He has already shown that he is willing to wait out for another opportunity having already turned down Washington.

But really, guys like Ben Johnson are rare.

Not after we kick can to get under 2025.

As of this post, we're $36M under the 2026 cap room.

This is a list of players on a void year:

Kamara
Cam
Hill
Davis
TM7
JWilliams
Saunders
Moreau
JJohnson
JT Gray
Young
Kpassagnon
Shepherd
Wilson
Shaheed

We are $81M over 2025. To get under, a huge chunk of that has to be kicked down the road to 26/27. We don't have many options we can cut to save money in 2025. Post June 1 would push stuff to 2026

Depends if we bottom out and are in position to draft a qb worth a frick, ultimately that’s all that matters in this league. The Texans almost instantly went from one of the more dire looking situations to a young, exciting team.

And over $200 million in 2027

Like I said, you’ll have to eat into that but there’s plenty there

Cutting Kamara, Lattimore, Hill, Ramczyk, Davis plus some other scrubs cuts that number in half. Then extend guys like Taylor and Granderson, and yes void years some guys. You can get there.

This thread is silly. It’s the top job in the league and 1/32 that pays millions and potentially tens of millions if you make it past the first contract. You’re better than this.

How are the saints the top job in the league for a guy who didn’t grow up in New Orleans?

If the Saints hire a coach committed to rebuilding the right way the cap issue gets sorted organically and quickly.

Unless it’s a team that‘s already built to win big (the Saints are not) the correct decision is always to blow up most of the roster and purge the veterans (stockpiling as many picks as you can) and getting younger everywhere. SF is the model when Shanahan and Lynch took over - purge 90% of the roster and load up on picks, be absolutely horrible for year 1 and half of year 2 with your cheaper young players, NFC Champs year 3

Doing it right means his first year win ceiling probably ends up closer to 5 than 9…but if they want that number to be 12 and higher by year 3, that’s what they’ll do

Given Gayle doesn’t hold anyone accountable it’s reasonable to assume he’ll be given time. It honestly shouldn’t impact the job at all

There are only so many jobs. I don't think coaches are in a position to be picky when it comes to an NFL HC job.

Why did Payton ever take the Saints job? Because Green Bay turned him down.

Only 32 openings on the planet. High paying and high profile.
Easy to fill. Hard to get right.

To be fair…Dave Canales took the panthers job which considering their owner is one of the worst jobs in all of sports. Saints will be fine
