Let me start by saying I've been to Boston many times, but I am looking to take the wife somewhere different on a date night while we are in town next month. It doesn't have to be fancy (though I'm not opposed). I just would like to try some place I've never had. Anything that can be reached by public transport and a little walking. All suggestions welcomed!

HIGHLY recommend either Moon Bar or Mooncusser. I say either because they are in the same building (Moon Bar on the first floor, Mooncusser on the second) and they are run by the same EC. His name is Carl Dooley - he came in 4th or 5th years ago on Top Chef, and his food is phenomenal.

Moon Bar is a much more casual, Caribbean-style spot with fantastic cocktails and shared plates. Mooncusser is more of a fine-dining spot with a 4-course prix fixe menu. Both incredibly good, but two very different vibes. So it depends on what you're wanting.

It's a very short walk from the Park Plaza.

FULL DISCLOSURE: I will say that I am biased because Carl is a friend of mine, but I wouldn't steer people in his direction if the food wasn't outstanding.

Had dinner at the Fox and the Knife in Southie this summer. Small-ish Italian place, really good food. Also had dinner at Somaek a new-ish Korean place. It's very popular, highly reviewed, really didn't like it. It's a small plates place and I just didn't find a lot on the menu that was appealing. I was hungry after we left and I'm not a fattie.

You’re completely entitled to your opinion, but I completely disagree. Fox and Knife is a solid spot (in my opinion). Their charred broccoli Caesar salad alone is worth the trip.

Funny enough, the EC of Fox and Knife (Karen Acunowicz) and the chef I previously mentioned at Mooncusser/Moon Bar were on the same season of Top Chef together.

Grotto. Small Italian place in a basement (“Subterranean hideaway”) in the Beacon Hill area. We were drinking in the area and started looking for somewhere we could walk to for dinner.

We had never heard of this place, but it turned out to be one of our favorites in a week of eating out. We had escargot, duck confit, tagliatelle ragu (fantastic), and gnocchi with short ribs. Would go back any time.

Yes - highly recommend. It’s been years since I’ve been and I am guilty of forgetting about it, but damn is it good.

Wut? I liked Fox and Knife, thought it was great. It was the Korean place that I didn't care for.

Entirely my fault - I misread your post.

I haven’t been to the Korean place you went to.

Grotto and Fox and Knife are both great, both different vibes. So it just depends on what you’re going for. Grotto is more small, dark environment with more classic Italian fare, fox and knife more of an inventive menu and more modern atmosphere.

Again, both are great, no wrong answer. Just depends on what you want.

I'm a Bova stan, personally. I hate to cheat when I'm in town, but I guess I can have two desserts.
