My front yard has eight large live oaks. The yard is 60/40 grass to dirt. Would a aerator / seeder using a winter grass work or help establish the future on my yard?

It'll grow grass this winter and look good, but I doubt live through next Summer. Where are you located?

Cool season grass ain't gonna live in your yard very long.

Rye also likes a lot of sun, so you got the double whammy of shade and heat in the Summer where you live that will destroy the grass.

But it'll look great in the Winter and now is a good time to seed!

Add Rye. Using Annual Ryegrass may provide 60-80 lbs/ac of nitrogen. This alone could more than pay for the cost of the seed and planting it.

If you thin out the trees even more, you could have St Aug or Zoysia. Both would be expensive with that amount of sod.

Perennial Ryegrass will look beautiful from November to May. Keep it fertilized for an extra pop of dark green.

Thanks fellas. I know any kind of grass will be hard to grow. The grass that is there, is mostly Augustine. Looks like I'm gonna have a green yard this winter.
Dumb question. The winter grass won't affect the Augustine that is growing, correct?

It actually will. Most people spray it out (kill it) before warm season grasses start really greening up in April/May. Ryegrass leaves behind a toxin in the soil that inhibits another grass growing in the same place.

But do it anyway, and spray it out.

Rye requires lots of nutrients and if you don't fertilize regularly, rye will deplete the lawn....

Use perennial rye instead of annual rye. Doesn't get as tall and stringy and also cuts better

just finding this thread. I moved into my current house back in March and it had a great winter grass(that I can't remember the name of) which dies off in the spring to make way for the summer perennial grass. The winter grass was great so I'd love to replicate it.

Google is recommending Tall fescue.

PRG is a turf grass. Think Augusta National. That's what they use.

ARG is animal food. Think cow pastures and food plots for deer. That's what they use.

ARG grows extremely tall, extremely lime green, and is always wet and slimy. It will stain your concrete.

PRG grows like a turf grass should and will be dark green in color.

People think perennial will stay. But it will burn out pretty quick. But if you overseed you definitely want to kill it off in April or you will get dead patches. I did it once in my zoysia and I will never do again.

I also fricked up and bought annual rye once. That shite grows so thick you can’t cut it. And it stays wet.

Yes, definitely spray it out by tax day.

I didn't overseed. That was bare dirt, and I still wish I had sprayed it out in April.
