We are going next August and will stop at Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan. It will be 4 of us, all between 45 and 52 years old and in good health. Not looking for a 10 mile hike, but definitely open to some adventure.

Snorkeling in Ketchikan. Snorkeling in Alaska sounds crazy, but I thought it was great. It's interesting because it's so different than the normal Caribbean, Hawaii, etc. kind of underwater thing.

My "cool story, bro"...I went on a private whale watch with about 10 people on the boat, and Bowzer from Sha Na Na was our guide. I was on a cruise with him and some other old musicians (Jay Siegel, Freddy Cannon ..) in like 2017 or 18. He has been to Alaska a ton and was extremely knowledgeable. We got extremely lucky and the water was super calm and we saw a ton of whale activity too.

Ketchikan
LINK

We’ve done 2 trips with them. Laid back and flexible.

Juneau we skip an excursion and walk through town and hike up Mt Roberts.

Skagway
Take the train or van up into Canada and bike back into town. 17-20 miles downhill. Fantastic.

You have to go on a whale watching boat. It was one of the best experiences of my life.

A pod of five whales came right at the boat and dove under us just as they reached the boat.

We also had a pod surface right next to the bow while bubble net feeding. They were so close to the boat that I got sprayed with water.

Seeing them in person had been a dream ever since I first saw them on TV as a kid.

Out of those three I would put Ketchikan third. It is a pleasant town to walk around in but I did not find a lot to do there. The boardwalk is interesting and there is a house of ill repute there, but once you get inside, you find out that it is now some kind of museum.

I would put Skagway up there on the strength of the all day tour to the Yukon Territory which includes a ride on the White Pass Railroad train.

Juneau is fun. Another walkable town with some historic bars and nice restaurants. Walk up the hill to see the Russian Orthodox Church. Take the whale watching tour that circles Shelter Island. Mendenhall Glacier may not be the most impressive glacier in the world but it might be the most impressive one you can drive to.

Agreed. Walk around and go see the totems at the park.

Juneau whale watching - Choose a small boat instead of a giant one with tons of people. Make sure and go to Mendenhall Glacier. There is no need to pay for a tour for this. You can just get a cab to take you. Get their number so you can call them for pickup. The cab drops you at the park entrance when the booth to pay is. It's cheap and a short walk (1/4 - /15 mile) to the visitor center. Do the 1 mile walk down to the glacier and the lake. We had a very long shore time in Juneau. It stays light late so we did whale watching early, then went to Mendenhall and still had time to stop into the Red Dog Saloon for a beer. It was touristy, but the building is old and it was fun.

Skagway - Do the train up and drive back with Chilkoot Tours. It's a lot less people in their group than the cruise lines tour. They are pretty much the provider of choice for this trip. The great thing about the trip back in their small bus is that they are flexible with their stops. They see something along the way and stop for photo ops. I think we had maybe 15-18 people in our group when we did this. Much better than being on a big charter bus.

Of all the Southeast towns, Ketchikan is the homeliest.

In Juneau if you have time I suggest renting a car. The city is huge in area, and some spectacular places you can drive and access.

Most tourist stay in specific areas and dont see the more scenic parts of the city.
