Situation:

3 kids under 5. Not a whole lot of time for an offset.

I have a 7 year old pit boss pellet grill. Never really loved the flavor and lack of smoke. I like Smokey flavor. It’s beyond fixing now as the lid won’t shut all the way, the inside is rusted and corroded out. Time for a new grill.

That being said, I love the flavor of charcoal/wood smoke.

Budget is $1,000ish and I’d like to get something that will last 7-10 years. At that point I’ll splurge and buy something that will last me the rest of my life and I can pass down.

I have a huge gas griddle. So burgers and dogs are done on that.

We would like to cook

Butts
Brisket
Chicken
Ribs
Steak
Backstrap
Ducks
Doves

Keeping my limited time in mind, what do you recommend?

I’m looking hard at the PK 360 (seems like a pain to clean out)

Kamados

Weber Premium kettles

Recteq even though I have pellet fatigue.

TIA

I don’t personally have one, but heard the Masterbilt Gravity Series is great. Sounds like it would be perfect for your needs.

$1039.20 right now for the recteq Flagship 1100 smoker on their website. Looks like it has a hopper and can get up to 700 degrees.

Traeger also has smokers with hoppers.

I love my Weber Summit Charcoal (now Weber Kamado E6). I think it is as good or better than the ceramics. That said, the smoking capacity is limited. Maybe you could squeeze two briskets. Mine is about 7-8 years old I think. Still going strong. It is the only grill/smoker I have and meets my needs.

I don’t think the PK360 is much different. Maybe even less smoking area. It is a nice grill though and will last a lifetime.

Sounds like you might woul like a green egg or an akorn. I have a recteq, and a smaller akorn for when I want to grill over direct charcoal.
I personally think every man should have a couple different grills for different needs.

WSM - Weber Smoky Mountain, 22" size if you want the room, or the 18" will do just fine. They come equipped with double racks and can cruise along at optimal temperature with little effort.

Offset is not the way to go having 3 kids under 5. You don't need added sleepless nights.

To the WSM you could add the DigiQ Bundle and have more control over temps automatically.

Don’t they have a lot of electrical issues?

WSM is on my list. But would I be able to grill steaks?

Go with an egg. It will last the rest of your life and you can basically do everything on it.

No. It's a dedicated smoker. (Theoretically, you could squat down and grill over the charcoal bowl, but that's ridiculous.)

To grill steak, you'd want a Weber Kettle (inexpensive), gas grill, etc.

I've done makeshift grilling on one. Buy an extra water pan at Academy. Put that pan on the second grill rack and put charcoal in that pan. Place meat on the top grill rack.
It's plenty good for grilling burgers and steaks.

I've had mine for 3 years and haven't any. The only "issue" I had was to replace the temperature probe, which was about $20.

They had some switch issues in the beginning and maybe some fans and boards but I think that has worked its self out mostly. They have a new redesign units that just came out not long ago to address some of the issues. The main one for me is the potential flare-ups but its somewhat preventable/controllable. The new units are supposed to be better but I haven't followed.

OP look at the masterbuilt gravity smokers its like a pellet grill that uses charcoal and wood. I will load a whole (smaller) split in the hopper surrounded by charcoal and get good smoke.

You could, but not an ideal setup.
The WSM gives you much more smoking space that standard kamado's don't offer.

How many steaks are you talking? A simple Jumbo Joe can grill the hell out of a steak!

Love my Masterbilt Gravity. Mine is almost 2 years old and it’s worked great (except for the spotty WiFi that only half works).

Get a Z grill, update the gasket and get a smoke tube if you want more smoke flavor.

WSM

I love this smoker and after googling, it looks like there are some easy mods for grilling....if needed.

Does the WSM produce much better smoked meats than the kettle style premium Webers?

I'd suggest settling in on which is most important, smoking or grilling? If smoking, how much real estate do you need?
If grilling, a Kamado, whether it's the Weber Summit Charcoal, Green Egg, Primo Oval (MADE IN USA), Venom, etc.

From Experience, I own, have owned, WSM's, Weber Kettle's, Smoky Joe Offset, Pellet Grill, Primo Oval XL, Gas grills.

Did not like what pellet grill turned out, offset smoker was amazing but requires TLC, so sold those off. The Primo Oval XL was one amazing smoker/ grill (does a great steak, smoked amazing and could get hot as hell) and am sorry I parted with it as I intended to go the Weber Summit charcoal Kamado route.

My current set up is a Stainless Wilmington Gas grill, Weber Performer with Venom control and with Only Fire ceramic inserts, 18" WSM and two other standard Weber Kettle's. Will be downsizing again selling off the WSM and two kettles as it's just the wife and I at home now, and not tailgating like we used to.
