Reports are coming out that Warner Bros declined test screenings for “Joker 2”

This tells you everything you need to know. They knew the film was shite yet didn’t want bad test screenings to negatively affect the box office performance. Warner Bros bit the bullet on this one.
Phillips should stick to directing original films, because he absolutely sucks arse at making sequels.

Despite the risky musical element and dry courtroom sequences, I’m told Warners declined to test screen Folie à Deux to get audience feedback before Phillips locked the film. That’s quite a tightrope to walk on the studio’s most expensive movie of the year.

Despite the costly budget of Joker: Folie a Deux, a new report claims Warner Bros. elected not to have any test screenings for its latest comic book film. The first Joker was a stunning success for Warner Bros. and DC. The villain origin movie grossed over $1 billion and was the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time before recently being passed by Deadpool & Wolverine. While the first movie was originally meant to be a one-off, a sequel was green-lit as the studio wanted to bank on the franchise's success.

But why did they then show it at a festival? The negative reviews started there. The momentum shifted. Unlike the first one, which got rave reviews in Venice, this one didn't. WB miscalculated badly

Whatever the reason, it was a huge frick-up by WB. The current box office performance on opening day is 3X less than what the original Joker made.

Yeah, the box office will be similar to the marvels

Hollywood is in a very weird place. The budgets have grown so large that a general audience appeal is a must, not a "nice-to-have" for any major project.
But, at the same time, the decisionmakers and creative talent appear to hate the general audience.
So, they only make money in spite of themselves (Barbie, Oppenheimer, Deadpool 3, Inside Out 2). The films they really like and want to do well, "for the modern audience" largely fail.
And Joker 2, in particular, being made to "stick it" to fans of the original seems particularly suicidal from a business standpoint.

TBF to the new owners, this was greenlit by Toby Emmerich. Now, Zaslav may have been able to shelve it, but he likely wanted to see what Phillips would give us. He actually wanted Phillips to be in charge of running DC at one point

That’s why they made Caddyshack 2 as well

I think that may be very optimistic.

The marvels did $205 million WW. This should be able to reach or even surpass that total.

So now we like test screenings, the tool used by studios to make sure their movies play to the lcd?

No idea why they decided to go the musical route. I would love to know the reasoning behind that call because it seems so out of left field.

quote:I think it’s more likely that this movie was such a unique, out of the box concept that reshoots to change the tone/style/plot/etc. would have been useless. At the end of the day, the core of the film is something very strange. The studio knew that when they green lit it. No amount of tinkering was going to change that core strangeness… Warner just had to hope that Phillips would be able to deliver, they were never going to be in a position to tweak this one into something more desirable than the initial attempt.

The wrong people liked the first movie so they had to make sure they didn’t like the sequel.

Once you realize that hollywood hates us and operates out of spite it all starts to make since.

I feel like one or two musical dream sequences would have been fine. It wasn't non stop singing like Les Mis was but it was a lot.

I enjoyed the tap dancing, him and Harleys escape, and the courtroom musical numbers. The rest were meh. I actually laughed at the scene where he's yelling at Harley to stop singing. That's how the audience felt by the end of it.
