If tweet fails to load, click here. Do the vols actually have the best class?

Two different publications seem to think so.
We only have 10 incoming freshmen. So on a per player basis you could argue ours is better. They have a larger class, but the quality is absolutely there as well.
Realistically, with these rankings its LSU and Tennessee in tier 1. There is a decent step down before you get to tier 2.

They have almost double the number of kids, so from a total points recruiting ranking standpoint yes, they have more "points" than us putting them higher. Our class overall is much more quality though top to bottom.
This is kind of the issue with baseball recruiting team rankings (and rankings in general across sports). They don't necessarily cap the number of kids getting "points" for your total, so inherently someone taking 20 kids is going to have a higher points ceiling than someone taking 10 kids. The 10 kid class could look overall better than the 20 kid class, but that wont show up in the "rankings" part, but rather the averages part.
Perfect game had our class #5 to TN #1, again an example of quantity over quality:
- Tennessee is bringing in 20 freshmen (GIGANTIC class), we are bringing in 10 freshmen.
- Our average player earned about 12 points in PG rankings (by FAR the highest among anyone) on PG rankings system, Tennessee's average player earned about 8.3 points (3rd best)...this is how Tennessee ended up with 166 (8.3 x 20) points to our 120 (10 x 12) though, so they had 38.3% more points than we did with a 100% larger class
- All 10 of our 10 freshmen are ranked in their Top 250, only 11 of Tennessee's 20 are ranked Top 250 (55%)
- 9 of our 10 are ranked Top 120 (90%), only 8 of their 20 are ranked Top 120 (40%)....so now we're ALREADY ahead on quantity and not just average among those
- 3 of our 10 are ranked in the Top 15 (30%), 0 of their 20 players are in the Top 15 (0%)
So you tell me who had the better class. We certainly have more quality overall than they do, and they have a bunch of guys ranked outside the Top 250 while we have none.

Seems like we should just see our our 10 compare to their best 10

Total domination by SEC. Nice to see UF farther down on the list.

Baseball recruiting leans heavy on projection. There's always a boat load of guys that don't pan out.

Who are the 3 in top 15? And sorry but I am not too key’d in to baseball recruiting, all 3 are making it to campus? Thanks for info.

At this point, these rankings only pertain to guys that already made it to campus.
The three are Schmidt, Arrambide, and Curiel.

Great analysis t-bird, your post was very informative.

Surprised no Arky. They've been a pretty consistent program for several years now even if they self-destruct in post-season.
Others feel free to weigh in, but it seems that unless a player plays early, they portal-out. 'Waiting your turn' is now a relic.
Wished all ten would stay in BR as long as they could but in reality many of them aren't likely to finish their college baseball career elsewhere.

Are these rankings just the high school recruits? I saw one article (think it was Baseball America) that listed the top teams as far as transfer classes. LSU was #1 and TN was #2.
I haven't seen anything that ranks complete incoming classes (high school plus transfers).

Does it seem off that Arky didn't make top10? They brought in another very good class. I want to sweep them this year!

quote:well did they bring one in one of the top classes for 2024 last year and had like 7 top 100 guys make it campus. Maybe they didn’t have the room to take as many HS players and left some spots open for portal guys.

Baseball America has LSU #1 when it comes to newcomer rankings factoring in both portal & high school players.

He was PG's 6th rated RHP in this LSU class alone.

But overall incoming Freshman and Portal we definitely rank 1 - I read where we have 9 of the Top 100 MLB prospects.
