Hotel recommendations for family of four in New York City?

I'm looking into visiting New York in December with my wife and two kids (11 and 6). Any recommendations for budget/family friendly hotels? We don't care much at all about where we stay, so amenities, features, in-hotel bars/restaurants, etc don't matter. As long as it's safe and in a decent area, we're good.
Most Google searches are pulling up swanky options that are going for $500+/night at the least. I don't mind hitching a ride on the subway to get across town, so it doesn't have to be central Manhattan.
Any suggestions?
Edit - It doesn't necessarily have to be cheap. Just in a safe area, clean, and not trying to do too much.

Check out Hotel Beacon in UWS. You can book a family suite with 2 double beds. That will get you basically a small apartment with a separate living area and kitchenette. It's 2 blocks from the 72nd st subway station and about 4 blocks to Central Park and the Natural History Museum. We go every year & stay there. There's a Fairway market across the street and a Trader Joe's a couple blocks down. We stock the fridge on day 1. Saves a ton of money on food.

Hilton has several right off Times Square that are usually cheaper than that.
Hilton Garden Inn, etc.

There are a number of decent hotels in the Long Island City area that are often considerably cheaper simply as a result of being just over the East River into Queens. I've stayed in that area before to good effect. And Roosevelt Island is right there and would absolutely be of interest to your kids.

Marriott Marquis Times Square
Crowne Plaza Times Square
Both reasonable priced.
I prefer the Marriott.

Second the FIDI. For a family of 4 try the mint house. It’s a hotel/apartment type place. Plenty of space and very comfy! They have 2 bedroom options and their pull out couch was even super comfortable. 2 bathrooms are available too. Wall street station is close and so is Fulton street station. 9/11 museum and memorial as well as the oculus and many other great places around.

What time in December? Assuming closer to the holidays maybe an issue, that’s one of the most expensive times a year in NYC and we are getting somewhat close to last minute

We are going for Thanksgiving and staying at the Belvedere. About 2K with all taxes and fees for 5 nights.
We know several people that have stayed there and loved it.
