Hard to define him. I love him, but I have friends who know music and I respect their choices, but don’t give him any respect. Sure his voice is an acquired taste. Just hard to put my finger on what it is I love. What are yalls opinions on him.

I do like his early straight folk stuff, but it’s when he gets to Bringing It All Back Home (through Blonde On Blonde) that he just goes through the roof for me.
But whenever he comes up in a “music conversation” I immediately concede on the voice.
But I have seriously dug him for a long time.

He's a lot like Tom Waits...you have to learn to appreciate the voice, but the lyrics are top-shelf.

Have your friends listen to Blonde on Blonde or Blood on the Tracks. Timeless masterpieces. Nothing else comes close.

Sings through his nose. Don’t get the appeal.

...and Desire, Basement Tapes, John Wesley Harding, and Oh Mercy. The guy is a brilliant song writer and his voice, while not perfect by any means, fits his music. His catalogue is truly top notch.

quote:
Half-wracked prejudice leaped forth
"Rip down all hate,"
I screamed
Lies that life is black and white
Spoke from my skull,
I dreamed
Romantic facts of musketeers
Foundationed deep,
somehow
Ah, but I was so much older then
I'm younger than that now

I don't think that he is a terrible singer. Does he have a classically "good" voice? No. But that doesn't mean he can't sing. He knows how to use his voice which is the most important ability when it comes to singing IMO.

If he had to sing for his supper as a child, he would have died of starvation by age 10.
"Acquired taste" is a bullshite excuse his nutswingers use because they can't be honest enough to admit that their poet laureate's voice and delivery are atrocious.

He’s a musical icon, and I have no problem with that. That being said, I cannot tolerate listening to his music.

I would downvote you for this comment, but I simply cannot stop laughing at it so, instead, thank you.

I would rather listen to Dylan sing than the lead singers of:
Zep
Rush
Boston
Starship (Mickey Thomas)
Budgie - they never made it in tUS so one here cares, but I still hate him
Or for that matter, any rapper

Although I did like the early Dylan work when I was younger, I actually really like the stuff he's done for the past 30 years or so, beginning with Good As I Been To You and World Gone Wrong. Even like Triplicate.
I think he's great.

I was obsessed for a good while. The songwriting is spectacular. I don’t even really think about the voice. I accept it. If the voice bothers someone that much, he’s the most covered artist ever. There’s infinite albums of covers to listen to. You’re missing out if you don’t.

These albums are my favorites from him:
Blood on the Tracks
Desire
Infidels
"Isis" is my favorite Dylan track.

I think what he said was more important than the way he said it

For about six months, all I listened to in my car was Dylan. His catalog is super deep. Columbia Records has done an amazing job of excavating it - they found gems in what were considered to be his less fertile years, like when he was a born again Christian and when he was making spotty records in the 80s. (There were a lot of great songs that were perversely left off of mediocre albums.) Bringing it All Back Home and Highway 61 Revisited are just amazing albums.
The guy just does what he wants and follows his muse where it takes him. Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad, it usually isn't dull or predictable.
