How heavy is too heavy for a 1500 truck?

I have a 2020 1500 Silverado 4x4 z71 RST
Currently pulling, mostly short distances, a 25 foot bay boat, single engine. Boat without engine is 2700 pounds. 300 Yamaha is probably 600 pounds plus dual axle trailer and all my equipment. I suspect total weight is 5000 pounds
Stepping up to a 28 next speeding. Dual 300s on it. Boat is 5800 plus 1200 for two engines and trailer plus equipment. Probably looking at 8500 total weight.
Mostly too short distances, but it’s in pretty heavy traffic. Less than 10 miles each way. But I do make a yearly trip to the keys and a few trips an hour and a half north.For scalloping.
Too much for the 1500? Lots of shite drivers here that like to cut you off. Thinking about stepping up to a 2500. But honestly, I love this 1500 and it is my daily driver.

I got a 2024 gmc 2500 with gas engine. Tow 10k skid steer and it's fine. Don't have the pick up of diesel and sucks fuel when towing but diesel engine is 12k more, fuel cost, def cost, maintenance is more, more issues with all the bullshite government forced exhaust components. So go with 2500 gas.

Here is another issue that I have. These new Florida houses have tiny driveways. I’m not sure how much wider the 2500 is over the 1500 but I am close on space. We park both our vehicles on the outside edges and still barely having enough room to open the doors. I know it sucks, but it is what it is.

I have read about all the new issues with the new diesels. I probably would stick with gas because of that. Gas mileage is not a huge issue for me as I do not drive a lot of miles.
Had a F250 in the early 2000s with the 7.2 power stroke and loved it. But I did a lot more driving then. Now I pretty much live in a bubble for most of the year.

What’s GVWR, payload? You may surpass that long before you get to the tow rating.

It also more about stopping it then pulling it.
Does the new boat trailer have brakes?
Maybe an option to have a weight distribution hitch for the long pulls also. I would see if there are load leveling options as well before getting a new truck at these costs..

I had a 1500 3.0 duramax and towed my kubota w front end loader on a 20’ trailer, box blade and bush hog, I was pushing 8500 pounds. It towed ok, just couldn’t distribute the weight well enough to be comfortable towing it. I had trailer brakes so that helped a lot. New boat trailer should have brakes; and its weight will be distributed properly.
You would be ok short distances but I think if I were towing it a lot I would bump up to the 2500.

If anything a 2500 gas but I would stick with the 1500.

Yea I think Thais would probably work and was my initial hopes. The trailers do have surge brakes. Unfortunately, the trailers get eat up here pretty quick with the salt water.
I towed bass boats most of my life and they were never an issue. This is my first CC and it’s a totally different tow.

Get the gasser if you are pulling on flat ground.
Remove or relocate further back the palm tree. Go to Home Depot and get 2 undocumenteds and have them dig up sod and lay you extension driveway

We are not "allowed" to widen the driveway here. I know. I know
We already tried. Its just part of being in this kind of place. We love 80% of living here and just deal with that 20% we dont like. That driveway is in the 20% along with being told we cant widen it. Fairly big houses on small lots

If you have good trailer brakes you can tow a tank. Without good trailer brakes you’re chancing it.
I’ve towed a skid steer 2.5 hrs to place in MS with zero issues but trailer has electric over hydraulic disc brakes.

not a big fan of the chevy. I swapped from a 2019 ram 2500 to a 2023 chevy 1500 and the ram was just a much better thought out truck. my friend got the latest chevy 2500 and it is much like my 1500, just not a well thought out truck. ill be swapping back to ram soon. I am waiting for the ramcharger tungsten which imo will be the baddest truck ever made.

Short drives - 1/2 ton should be fine
Long drives - would probably go 3/4 ton
The 1/2 ton should get the job done but probably will not be comfortable. I’ve towed 31ft boat with twin 300s and probably 200gal of fuel a few times for 30 miles or so with 1/2 ton. The trailer had electric/hydraulic brakes though. I didn’t die, but I probably won’t do it again if I can avoid it. Had to basically put the pedal to the floor going up the empire bridge

I have a boat that weighs 6k - 7K pounds. I went to a 3/4 ton with a gas engine. Yes my buddies make fun of me for not getting the diesel but I have no regrets so far and I can't see myself not having a 3/4 ton the rest of my life. Yeah the ride is rougher when not towing but the heavier suspension and brakes are worth it with a load.

I routinely tow my 6500lb boat with my 2020 Sierra 1500 5.3 2wd and no, it doesn't have the max tow package. It does great and averages 11mpg. I drag it from BR to BSL all the time and just keep the cruise on 65mph and the truck does great.
