Clingmans Dome in Great Smoky Mountains is now Kuwohi after Cherokee request is approved

On September 18, the U.S. Board of Geographic Names voted in favor of the request submitted by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) to change the name of Clingmans Dome to Kuwohi. The BGN, which is part of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), is responsible for standardizing geographic names throughout the federal government.

Thomas Clingman was not a significant enough person to have such a landmark named after him.

Apparently him and a professor from UNC, Elisha Mitchell, got in a pissing contest over the highest peak in the Appalachians. Mitchell was later proven correct and Mt. Mitchell is 40 feet taller without the platform at Clingman's dome LOL.

The observation deck was built by the communists in the Civilian Conservation Corps as was almost every other amenity in the Smokey Mountains National Park and every National Park in the US.
ETA - Apparently it is the third highest point in the Appalachians without the observation tower. 2 in NC are taller. Old boy ought not had anything named after him if he didn't know how to use a damned tape measure....

How do they know (with any certainty) "Kuwohi" was the Cherokee name? I am sure there are some records when a map was made, but I doubt every hill and peak did not have a specific indian name. Though it is the highest point in the smokies, it isn't a Denali or Everest.
Presumably at some point one single indian dude was asked "Hey, what's that hill called?" he responded "Kuwohi", which means "big arse hill."
