Holy crap. How was this rated PG with Keaton dropping F-bombs?

I'm not a prude but I wasn't expecting that. I thought even one F bomb got an automatic R rating.. see Snakes on a Plane.

The movie was out in 1988 so I would have assumed it would have least warranted a PG13 rating.

Tl;Dr CAD rewatched Beetlejuice for the first time in 30 years

check IMDB parents guide before you let your kid watch a movie. It takes 10 seconds.

You're allowed one f bomb for PG13, though a few movies have gotten away with two.

PG 13 is notorious for letting 1 F bomb, that’s why in the new one they bleep out the second one

Beetle juice being PG is a bit odd, ratings were a lot different back then, PG13 had only been around since 1984 so guessing they were still finding the level there. Ratings historically have a lot of odd instances like that, I watched a documentary on it once and how much backdoor poltics plays into those things, or did for a long time

we did the same thing with our 11 year old and was shocked

honestly its been like that with almost all the old movies we show our kids

for all the bitching we do about kids movies today, the 80s/90s kids movies had all kinds of sex and language in them, far more than they do today

My oldest loves Greek mythology so I was like great let’s wash clash of the titans since it was PG. One min in just tits and arse fully out

My 5th grade teacher made this exact mistake

I still remember her leaping out of her desk chair to turn the TV off

I miss 80s boobs. Almost every movie had that one scene...

I was more shocked by the birthing scenes. My daughter was going to take her 7yr old. I put a stop to that.

Spaceballs was somehow PG despite raunchy jokes with the big one being an F bomb near the end of the movie.

That’s how it was back then… violence and sex got you PG13 or R post-84 but foul language didn’t do it unless Eddie Murphy was dropping F bombs ever 30 seconds.

And Clash was pre-1984, for the person who mentioned it, so it was in the same class as Poltergeist, Escape From Alcatraz, and a number of other movies which would have been PG13 or higher if released later than they were.

This doesn’t make sense. That movie has tons of F bombs doesnt it? Famously?

And you get one frick in a PG-13 movie. Also famously.

ETA: pretty sure Jaws is PG and has straight up nudity in it. As someone else pointed out, ratings can be weird. Especially on older movies around that time because PG-13 is relatively new. It came about because of Temple of Doom. It was the first time it was really obvious that there needed to be a step above PG and a step below R

I think you’re allowed one usage, depending on the context.

You can say “nice frickin’ model!”, but not “frick your mother!”.

Was about to post this.

Jaws is PG and literally has bush in it. Different times back then (and IIRC, PG-13 didn't exist yet).

Far more F-bombs drop around my house than most PG-13 movies. My toes against the couch have been responsible for more than their fair share.
Teach your kids that the word exists but it's not okay for them to use it.

I must have watched Beetlejuice on TV too much because I don't remember him cursing at all.

Interesting , per IMDB

fricking is used once despite the f word not being allowed to be used in a PG movie. This is the second PG rated movie to have an f word in it with the first being White Water Summer which was released a year earlier.

frick" is said twice, "Nice frickin' model!", "frick you, say it!".

Two uses of "shite", and two uses of "frick".

Two uses of "Jesus"

One use of "pissed off"

"Goddamn" is said at the very beginning of the film.
