The time to plant your food plots is almost here - at least if you're in SE Louisiana or SW Mississippi - post up what you're planning on planting this year.

For me its a basic mix of wheat, clover (crimson, arrowleaf and medium red) and daikon radish. I'm also adding chicory because mine got blasted by the drought last year and was thin this summer.

I am lucky to get ryegrass to grow in our awful sandy soil. We're working on getting it better, but it's taking a long time.

Here's what the bag says is in it, Caddo and Lincoln Parishes. Might throw some extra stuff in with it when we go plant.

I’m using Domain Overhaul for a small kill plot. It includes:

mix of buckwheat, spring triticale, crimson clover, balansa clover, and tillage radish.

This will be the first year trying something there. I sprayed it yesterday and I’ll clean it up next week. Once we have some rain in the forecast, I’ll broadcast the seed.

Hell that’s my silver lining to the season ending. Picking all the collards the deer haven’t eaten.

Green Cover Seed’s Fall Release in early October, with added cereal rye:
Buckwheat
Crimson clover
Balansa clover
Berseem clover
Spring forage peas
Winter peas
Black oats
Cereal rye
Radishes
Turnips

This will be my 4th fall to plant this, and it looks pretty good all winter, then the clovers and rye take off in the spring. I’ll plant my spring/summer crop in April.

Been at this a long time 40+ years in Louisiana and Miss. Trial and error, many test plots, years of making a mistake and tons of $$$ spent learning not only what deer want but what they don't want and what they really need. A lot of folks here will disagree but i go with what I know not what I've been told. First test your soil and 99% the time our going to need lime to get the ph right(esp in pine forest) if your not in fertile areas. If you do need to lime do not expect that spot to make a decent plot that year. Even with all the BS products they try to convince you absorbs better. Lime takes 1 year to break down to a point it helps your soil. PERIOD

3 things to stay away from
Wheat
Rye grasses
All the Oats
(now if you want a pretty plot that's lush thick then yes go with those 3 deer rarely browse it so it'll remain beautiful) i prefer a plot that's used and looks it)

Top plot options are a mix of:
Clover both red and white
Turnips all kinds
Radish most prefer the Daikon i haven't noticed where varieties matter
Rape
Chicory
Winter and or Clay peas, If your area is mild don't be afraid of purple hull or black eyes.

Mixture of above does several things obvious its variety of browse but second and most important I've found is the fact that they grow, mature, flower and fruit at different rates giving deer something to keep coming back to. Now hear me out your deer are going to stay in this and you plots are going to look like dammit from use. I've had to re seed late fall (dec) to keep up with forage consumption. Good Luck
