Watching Nuss from Willy B Stadium

First, I enjoyed Columbia. Great atmosphere for a 12pm EST game!
On thing I noticed out of Nuss is if he held on to the football a few times, he had multiple opportunities to extend drives and/or score himself with his legs, especially in the red zone.
He’s athletic (not JD great with his legs) and could offer more opportunities running himself (fake handoffs, misdirection, etc).
TD agree with this?

They may have told him not to run and take damage whenever possible just because we are toast if Nuss goes down. At least with JD, if he went down, you had a competent backup in Nuss behind him. If Nuss goes down, Rickie is still really green and Swann couldn't beat him out.

I agree he could pull the ball down and run more. Yesterday's game was one of them. He had opportunities to do harm with his legs but chose not to. I think that him giving the D reason to be worried helps other aspects of our offense.

He’s gotta add some escape and run to his game. He’s not a 6’5” pocket guy like Rothlesburger.
Also his accuracy falls off a cliff on the rollouts. Needs to be able to tuck and run.

I agree btw. I just think it’s Kelly’s soft approach overall. You’ll end up losing more than winning if you scheme scared of the what ifs. Just my opinion

Nuss has real Jarrett Lee energy out there. Constantly throwing off his back foot regardless of pressure, throwing up some absolute ducks under pressure. If it weren’t for some questionable technicalities on the horse collar and block calls, that’d have been a 14 point swing.
Don’t get me wrong, obviously he’s our best option and some of this might improve with experience, but I think that we should steel ourselves for some head-scratching plays.

Agree... he loses accuracy when he doesn't set his feet and throws off of his back foot; yes, he must tuck it and run sometime, otherwise he is playing into the hands of the defense; I think he could develop into a top-notch QB if he would work on his feet mechanics and take off running a few times

Agreed he is a beat behind the play. I assume this will improve with more playing time. What bothers me is his mechanics will drop away at key moments. I think he thinks he's "improvising", but it really just amounts to backpedaling and slow mechanics. He is still thinking too much. Again, with more snaps this should improve. Nuss is plenty smart and talented. It's just a matter of how quickly he reaches the next stage.

This is very true. A bunch of people are screaming for read options and Nuss to scramble more but there is no safety net if he goes down. Play calling benefited last year because having Nuss to back up allowed for a more aggressive approach with Daniels' legs.

Do you think having a guy being a sitting duck between the tackles has less chance of getting hurt?

Fun fact: The Cockpit nickname was created by Paul Dietzel when he was the HC there. Partially based upon the fact that he flew B-29s in WWII.

Do you think running him more doesn't?

His passing skills and decision making are not at j Daniel’s level yet.

It took JD a full year to really get there as a passer. Nuss is a few steps ahead of where JD was coming in (as a passer), so I expect him to improve a lot over the course of the season.

Oh great the thousandth thread pretending to have a new take by crying that Nuss isn't running and making excuses to bring up Jayden (apparently the only running qb you know).

No, he doesn't.

They weren't questionable.

Interesting Fact!
Daniels was criticized for not being patient until the receiver worked his way open, for one season and three games into the next., Instead, he would use his legs. Once he developed patience and was willing to throw the ball down field, he became the best QB in CFB.
Now Nuss is doing the opposite. Hopefully he matures quickly.

This * 1000.
I don't care how long Nuss has been a backup, that's a far cry from being QB1 and taking all the snaps during a real game. It takes time to learn how to actually play the position when you're the man in charge. Burrow and Daniels are prime examples of this.
The skillset is there, now it just needs some seasoning in real games plus some coaching along the way. I have no doubt that if he takes that opportunity he will improve greatly - hopefully this year, but more likely next year when he has a full year of tape to go over with his coaches and trainers.
And, yes, I know that doesn't do anything for the "BK year 3 gotta win NOW!" crowd, but this was always going to be a ground-up rebuild. So far, most realistic folks would say we're ahead of the curve.
As long as BK doesn't revert to Les and O levels of bone-headedness and stubborn streaks, I'm willing to give him until at least the end of the '25 season before passing judgement.
Just my opinion.
