Are Volvo vehicles considered well-made vehicles?

My buddy had a Volvo growing up and it was working on 300k miles at the time, but that was 25 years ago. I read where they were sold, so what can one expect regarding quality and durability?

I'm on my 3rd XC90 in a row and no issues at all.

We've bought three of them and still have one. The current one has been pretty trouble free, but it isn't used that much. They are great riding cars.
Volvo started as a Swedish company with a very solid reputation. Then Ford bought them in the early 2000s. I don't think Ford messed them up too badly. Then Geeley (Chinese) bought them. I think the Swedes are trying to buy them back now.
Our first one was a 99 and it was as bullet proof as any Honda or Toyota we've ever owned and just a pleasure to drive on long trips. Just a great wagon. They are pretty complicated now with lots of technology and turbos to get power out of a 4cyl.
I would not discount them at all, but I would do research. I guess Brickboard is still going. That was a good source. Find an independent Volvo mechanic and talk to them.

The current powertrains concern me. We have a 2013 with the inline 6 that's still going strong. It has had some electrical gremlins over its lifespan.

We’ve always had good luck with them. Their safety reputation makes me feel better with the wife and kids traveling all over the country.
Between the wife and kids we’ve had 7:
2 S60s
2 S40s
2 XC70s
XC90
We’ve pretty much only done routine maintenance on all of them and all except our first (S60) had over 150k miles. We traded that one early because we were about to have our 2nd kid and needed more room. My son still drives the XC90 with 200k miles and it runs great.
Between the wife and kids we’ve had 7:
2 S60s
2 S40s
2 XC70s
XC90

The older one were certainly reliable, not sure the newer ones are as reliable. We had a normally aspirated 5cyl wagon and it was basically bullet-proof for 17 years -- and I hated getting rid of it then, but we had too many cars. It had 250k on it then and had plenty of life left.
An S40 that we had included a 4cyl with a turbo. It was fun to drive and got good mileage, but It dinged you for about $250 a couple of times a year with sensor replacements and other things.
I don't think you can expect the kind of bullet-proof reliability they were known for twenty years ago. The cars are too complex now.

I think some of their old ads from the 80s said "They're boxy, but safe". Great reputation for safety. Pretty high price though.

They are Chinese owned and have been unreliable for around a decade now. Cant believe some of these other answers in the thread!
