If the head is bigger than the body leading to it, most likely venomous. Easiest way to remember.

Do baby rattlesnakes not have rattles?

If your “interest” is snakes, shouldn’t you have a basic knowledge of which ones can kill you and which ones can’t? I go shooting occasionally and I know that Glocks don’t have external safeties so I’m more careful with them so I don’t blow my leg or hand off.
You’d think that would be a basic prerequisite of doing something that can kill you or land you in the ER, maybe wear gloves when handling them if your favorite snake looks exactly like one that’s highly venomous?

That's not really true in many, many cases. I mean, if that leads you to leave most snakes alone anyways, then great, but it's a very unreliably method for determining if a snake is venomous

Other than Coral, which snake that is native to the US has a head the same size as its body that’s venomous? And yes my simple rule is to prevent people from handling snakes and stay away from them. It will lead to false identification of some non venemous as being so.

Glocks do have an external safety.

I don’t understand why people feel like they need to handle snakes to begin with just leave them alone.

Many of them when they are juvenile

There was a similar post on here a couple of years back where some teenage kid picked up a copperhead not knowing it was venomous, it bit him and his hand swelled up big time
