What am I missing here?

1. Register now, then purchase a round trip or two one-way flights
from 9/3-9/5.

2. Travel by 11/20.

3. Companion flies free* with you 1/6-3/6/2025.

So in theory, I could buy one roundtrip ticket today from ATL to ORD ($54) for a flight prior to11/20. Throw it away because who wants to go to ATL or ORD. Then I can purchase one $720 (current price) ticket for a flight to DEN in February and get to bring someone for free?

Members can register for this promotion, then book one round trip or two one-way qualifying Southwest flights between 8:00 a.m. Central Time (“CT”) on Sept. 3, 2024, and 11:59 p.m. CT on Sept. 5, 2024, (the “Promotion Period”) for travel from Sept. 3, 2024, and Nov. 20, 2024, (the "Travel Period"), and fly during the Travel Period to earn a promotional Companion Pass valid for use between Jan. 6, 2025, and March 6, 2025.

So I guess I cant just throw it away.

You could scan your boarding pass and then yell, “ I left the stove on!” Then start running.

You would have to take the flight, but yes that is how the companion pass works.

I did it yesterday. Mrs. TheWiz and I are taking a trip to Me Hee Ko in Nov. I just booked it again after signing up for the promotion and cancelled the old flight. I assume I will get the pass after we fly. We have two flying events Jan & Feb of 2025, so the companion pass will be nice to have.

If you have those Jan flights booked you’ll have to call after Jan 6 to convert her ticket to a CP. it’s not “active” until then

This is what I wanted clarification on. When can you add a companion to a reservation? Would it be after the Nov 10th date once this is completed or January once the specific session begins? Looking at the rules for companion passes, I've been able to find where it says go into My Trips, then click Add Companion (assuming youve already entered them into the system).

So I'd assume if you have the email from southwest that says you have a companion pass, you add them to the system, and you have a flight already booked for say 1/25, you should be able to add them before 1/6 unless I'm missing something

If Mr.Wiz has already booked her ticket, he may as well just cancel that now or as soon as he gets confirmation for the companion pass. That's probably what you were referring to, right?

ETA- Found the answer to my question above on the southwest website here- It is January 6, 2025

Q: When can I designate my Companion after earning promotional Companion Pass through this offer?

A: You’ll be able to designate a Companion after the promotional Companion Pass is awarded to your account (January 6, 2025).

One thing I can't remember is how they refund what was spent on the original fares converted to CP but I am pretty sure it depends on the type of fare and whether it was refundable. I think WGA fares are converted to flight credits but if it's a refundable fare I THINK that MIGHT be a refund but I am not 100% sure.

They want you to book a flight to fly before Thanksgiving weekend and they'll give you a free guest ticket after the New Year holiday weekend.

It's just Southwest trying to fill future empty seats because those are the slow periods before and after the holiday seasons.

I'm sure they'll push hard for a future credit to keep those cash monies in the system.

Why does that make a difference? The promotion will save money who already have flights planned during the promo duration planned money so who cares why they do it?

But if you already have the SW flights booked and can save money on multiple fares booking it makes sense.

You can fly to Dallas and fly home for $175 and be back home by halftime of the 2:30 SEC game for $175.

If you have two or more flights already booked between Jan 6 and March 6, it's a money saver. Doesn't matter why the promotion was created.
