The idea of “bigger is better” certainly applies to wind turbines. But, the enormous blades required for today’s most potent offshore wind turbines can’t easily be transported over land, limiting their use. A Colorado-based energy startup believes it has the answer: a colossal plane purpose-built to ferry the largest turbine blades imaginable.

Enter Radia, which has unveiled plans for the world’s largest airplane. Dubbed the WindRunner, this behemoth aircraft promises to revolutionize the renewable energy sector by simplifying the transportation of colossal wind turbine blades

The WindRunner’s colossal dimensions dwarf even the most iconic commercial aircraft. Measuring an astounding 356 feet long, with a height of 79 feet and a wingspan of 261 feet, it outstrips the Boeing 747-8’s length by 106 feet.

The WindRunner’s gargantuan form will necessitate specialized infrastructure. 6,000-foot semi-prepared runways will be needed at sites where turbine blades are manufactured to accommodate its landings and takeoffs.

“Today’s largest wind turbines and the even larger ones of the future cannot be transported to prime onshore wind farms via ground infrastructure,” states Radia on its website. This logistical hurdle served as the primary inspiration behind the WindRunner project.

Radia reveals that the WindRunner could hit the skies within four years. Mark Lundstrom believes that its primary purpose is to accelerate the growth of wind power

It will revolutionize the green energy sector by completely defeating the purpose a thousand times over with each flight.

Way to go.

So massive airplane, fuel, building of landing strips, all the equipment to do that, etc. etc.

I’m no green expert, but all that sure does sound pretty renewable to me?

Exactly.

Burning up a shitload of jet fuel is green for sure.

It takes a special sort of stupid to think wind energy is remotely a viable option.

You can be sure some big Federal bucks (aka Taxpayer Money) are going into this project, and rest assured that the Big Guy will get his off the top.

They are claiming it is cutting the costs of wind power. If true that is probably a good proxy from which to infer that it saves energy. I’m not saying it’s true, but it might be.

And how do they get the blades from the new airport to the build site?

A runway at every build site - tada!

why not just make a 3 prop heli using the blades themselves and fly them to the site?

No doubt. This plane will be funded as part of the green new deal money buried in the so-called Inflation Reduction Act.

I'm no aerospace engineer but that wingspan looks way too short.

They build large ships on the water. Why not build a plant near the water where they are going to used? Do they float? Renewable energy is stupid. What you going to do with the blade at end of life?

The old Higgins boat yard area of New Orleans looks available.

Maybe Mr Smart Guy gets gov. assistance and money builds green factory and airstrip. Launches startup green initiative for new plane. Makes his money. Declares bankruptcy. Government buys back cheap and a three letter agency takes it over for its convenience. Everyone wins lol

How about build the factory on the coast and use a boat to ferry it to the site.

Why don’t we fly them into outer space and drop them?
