How was the process? How much spent out of pocket? Did your HO's insurance go down?

TIA.

If Matt Moscona hawks it, I avoid it.

As an ins agency owner in AL, I have walked dozens through it.
Simple process.
Helped get over $350k for my clients.
AL leads the nation in fortified homes, and I was one of the first ppl certified in fortified homes.

I have not done the app in Louisiana, but my home state is known to muck simple things up.

Once you get your certificate, SHOP YOUR INSURANCE

I’ve done it in AL. If LA is as simple as AL, then it’s very easy. Hardest part is getting the website to work when the registration opens. Basically have to be on at midnight and be one of the last ones remaining that is refreshing their page. I didn’t get in until around 3:30 am. But after that the process is extremely simple.

I had to come of pocket about 5k. Got 10k for the grant. Insurance came down about 1k.

I had a new roof put on in April but not through the grant program.
The new roof saved me a huge chunk, and the fortified certification saved me an additional thousand. Old Roof vs New Fortified Roof was a roughly 50% savings with LA Farm Bureau.

In LA - I got tired of waiting for the grant to open back up and there’s no guarantee of getting a grant. I ended up paying out of pocket for the fortified roof and immediately saved $5,000 in insurance. Would have been nice to have the grant but frick it - no more waiting on the Gov.

I did it. You spend about $350 (not kidding) on an inspection to see if your home qualifies. The risk is that the inspection comes back not qualified. Then you are out those bucks.

Otherwise the process is easy. I was on Citizens and qualified in the first round of grants. Once your application is in, roofers beat down your door to do the work. We were really satisfied with our roofer. Had to go out of pocket about $8.5k over the grant, but my homeowners insurance went from $12,000 on Citizens to $4,100 with SageSure.

that is not just a fortified roof savings. that is combining your homeowner insurance option available of strictly having a new roof... plus an added fortified roof endorsement savings.

Thanks for that info. I signed up for their emails which will notify when the next round of grants will become available.

Did it in Alabama about 5 or 6 years ago. New roof. Cost me $500. No, insurance did not go down but I got a $15,000 roof for $500.

Didn’t feel bad at all because the taxes I pay are insane.

The grant money comes from the feds, if I recall.

Edited to add: Husband corrected me. Insurance went down a few thousand for a few years but went back up when fortified certification expired.

Oh, as to process, if I recall correctly we chose 3 estimates from preapproved builders (pre-approved by the state)..

But once the program starts jump on it. It’s usually limited to a certain amount of people.

Why was yours so much? Did you upgrade to a different type of roof from what you originally had?

It was pretty easy longest part was waiting for the state to review my inspectors report. Saved about 38% on my homeowners.

Do you get a cheese wheel and a check with the grant?

I looked into it. There's only certain times of the year where you can apply for the grant. You need to sign up for it immediately when the date opens.

I did it in LA, just like other poster said, $350 for inspector and the process was pretty easy. I came out of pocket 11k after the 10k grant. The roofer I used was easy to deal with and I was happy with their work. Switched from Citizens around 15k to Sagesure at 8k. House coverage around 850k in New Orleans.
