James Cameron ruined Alien

I never watched these movies until recently. Here are my thoughts.
Aliens is a decent movie by itself, but it completely ruins the first movie.
In Alien, one of the climaxes of the movie is when they realize Bilbo is an Android and after they destroy him, they ask him if there’s any way to kill the Alien and he’s like “It’s impossible” and “it’s the perfect organism”.
Of course, he could’ve been lying, but it set up for a creative way to get rid of an “invincible” enemy by shooting it off into space.
So when I watched Aliens I was like “Oh man I wonder how they’re gonna kill a bunch of these things. You can’t shoot all of them into space”
Imagine my disappointment when it turns out any retard with a machine gun or fire can actually kill them pretty easily.
The movie would’ve been much better if they stuck to the invincible storyline, their guns were useless and they just had to survive /escape until help came at which point they nuke the planet.
Additionally the supporting cast was wayyyy better in the first movie. All the crew members had actual personalities as opposed to the smooth-brained marines in Aliens who are like “hur-dur I shoot gun”
Of course I’ll admit the special effects are better in Aliens but I’ll take plot, characters, and creativity over FX any day. James Cameron took a creepy Sci-Fi movie with a solid premise into a mindless shoot-em-up that honestly just felt like Terminator with Aliens

They were both great movies but different.
One a classic sci fi horror film, one a classic sci fi action film.

I’m not sure if I agree with your underlying premise. But I will say that Aliens is vastly inferior to Alien. I know that’s not a popular stance around here but as fun as it is, it’s third at best for me in the franchise. It’s great as an action film, and I think to your point it completely shifts genres and is something completely different.

Have you ever been mistaken for a man?
Just set you up with a real softball

In which one did Ripley kick arse with a transformer robot? I liked that one.

I think the exact same thing can be said for first two Terminators.
ETA: Aliens is definitely an action film but it had some great horror elements of its own. Love that scene when they’re watching the xenomorphs get closer and closer on the radar and then the blips pass through the sealed door. Great stuff.

I never thought of that, it’s a good point. But the Alien doesn’t come off as indestructible. It does have an exoskeleton, but nothing that futuristic fire power couldn’t handle.

Alien and Aliens are unanimously considered some of the best sci-fi horror and action movies, respectively, of all time. This is a dumb take.

Well that's like your opinion man

That’s one of my favorite things about Aliens

Sounds like something Burke would say.

James Cameron has turned into a hack and a terrible film maker but he didn’t ruin Alien. His installment in that franchise is far and away better than any other besides the original.

Ashe only knew what was the limit of the company's understanding at that point. Aliens is set almost half a century into the future, AFTER the first human-xeno interaction, so it stands to reason that the science had changed, as it were.
Decent point made by the OP in general, although I disagree with his take on the lack of character development. Yeah there were some hurr-durr Marines used as plot fodder for the action, but the ones that made it to the end (or near the end) had decent character arcs inside the larger plot. Hicks grew into his leadership role. Hudson overcame his fear and proved to be highly competent and capable. Gorman accepted his role as a brave but inexperienced lieutenant who realized he fricked up and accepted help and advice from others. Vasquez was probably the least developed of the late survivors, but her character was still pretty cool.
Aliens is a top five all timer for me though, so I'm biased.

I think you might have taken this more literally than the film intended. Or maybe it's a bit of overly vague dialogue. But I don't think it was intended to convey that the aliens were gods who literally couldn't be killed. I dunno. Maybe I'm the one overthinking.

FFS, what did the crew of the Nostromo have for weapons? Weak, makeshift flamethrowers, kind of like the ones Elon sold for a while. They might as well have been armed with a hairspray can and a lighter.

Do you know any Marines? Shooting guns and eating crayons is a personality.
