This year I want to know "Would you rather have Garner Minshew or Derek Carr for the money?"

For reference:

Minshew = $13 million/year
Carr = $38 million/year

Thats $25 million dollar difference per year!! $25 million is enough to buy an elite OT or maybe few good offensive linemen.

Last year we asked the question Would you rather Baker for the $$$

The overwhelming majority thought this question was absurd and there was no way on earth Baker could out perform Carr. Well we know how that went. Sigh

We also asked Would you rather have Purdy?

We had a few more mixed responses on this one. Many admitted they preferred Purdy and his contract. Still a few doubled down on Carr and trashed Purdy. I think its safe to say now the majority of the nfl would take Purdy over Carr regardless of $$$ rn

Can't wait to take a look back at these responses after the year is over!

Baker is now basically just as expensive. Purdy may be the highest paid QB in the league after this season. Minshew is replacement level. I promise you paying Carr mid 30s AAV is not our issue

How about Carr at $38 vs Love at $55? Works both ways

Baker isnt cheaper anymore and Id rather have Carr than Baker for equal money. Minshew cant hold Carrs jock so I dont care how cheap he is, hes a backup level QB. Carrs contract isnt even bad in 2024, it aint 2004 anymore. Also, just so were all clear, Carr was a borderline top 10 QB last year so I dont undertsand the gripe with him and his contract some people have. Its nowhere near as bad as some people are saying. 38 million is cheap by todays standards.

Passer rating is by a lot of peoples standards the best way to measure a QB and Carr was 11th last year which is ahead of Baker and the NFLs new hard on Jordan Love.

Edit to say that he was actually 10th in rating according to stat muse and only .2 behind the next guy Jared Goff who got some MVP talks.

Give me Johnny Football for a tryout.

Seriously I would have kicked the tires on Baker Mayfield before the Carr deal and over Minshew.

After watching Jake Browning in relief for Bengals why not check with Cincy and see if he is available.

3year $100 million.. $33milion/year. We are spending close to $50 million more in the same 4 year window. "basically the same" right? Baker also won the division. He did what Carr was payed to do. He technically earned his contract.

Purdy doesn't even have two full seasons under his belt and he has 4 playoff wins. Carr doesn't deserve to be in the same breath as him

Minshew is replacement level

Not sure what that means but technically Carr got 'replaced' by Minshew.. Didnt he? I mean the raiders fired him so is he not replacement level also?

Don't matter. No oline no qb success.

Why do you keep stalking Carr?

Lets do some math..
Carr is 150 for 4 years
Baker is 100 for 3 years ($5miilion/year cheaper) but he also already had had a 1 year 4 milliion deal. So over the same 4 year period. Carr is close to $10 million more per year. Basically nothing!!!

Love is 25 years old and has shown some real potential. He also already has a playoff win.

Of course your numbers are off. The problem is you actually have to look into the contracts. Guaranteed money is the only thing that matters in the NFL. Let me educate you.

Carrs contract is basically 3 years 100 million guaranteed. Saints can pick up that 4th year if they want or move on. So that 150 number is not accurate. It will only matter if Carr is playing at a high level and we want to pay him 150.

Bakers contract is essentially a 2 year 60 million dollar deal. They can pick up that 3rd year and pay him 40+ if he performs. Same as with Carr and us

Carr = 33.3 million a year
Baker = 30 million a year

Numbers may be slightly off due to some incentives. But it will be close. I know Baker can make an extra 12 million if he reaches some incentives

Anyone saying Minshew is trolling, especially OP. Not even subliminal. Weak.

Yea the Mayfield thread last year was a troll too?? Everyone laughed and trashed on baker. No one was laughing at the end of the year.

If we move on from Carr, then that pretty much means the entire Carr experiment was a failure so this whole debate is pointless.

Well can't we at least include bakers 23' contract since it will be the same 3 year period. Imo its an apples to apples comparison.

Carr = 33 million/ year
Baker = 64/3 = 21 million/year

Carr is still making 10 more per year from 23'-25'. First year goes to Baker of course.

No where near a troll is you look at the state of the franchise, the current cap situation, and the contracts for both players. I do not think too many people are stating Minshew is better than Carr (OP may be, not 100% sure), but when you look at the way this team is put together and understand that neither one is brining you a Super Bowl; which would you rather? Minshew gives you a better chance to reset the roster, clear the cap, and begin the rebuild. Just look at the cap situation:

2024: Carr has a $12.7M cap hit, Minshew has a $8M cap hit. Saints are currently $10.7M under the cap. With Minshew over Carr, they'd have $5.4M in cap space

2025: Carr "currently" has a $51.5M cap hit, Minshew currently has a $14M cap hit. Saints are currently $96M over the cap. With Minshew over Carr, they'd only be $58.5M over the cap

2026: Carr "currently" has a $61.5M cap hit, Minshew comes off the books with $3M in dead money. The team is $20.3M under the cap, but only have 35 players under contract (including Carr). With Minshew they would have $78.8M in cap space and could ride another cheap QB, roll with Haener/Rattler, or draft a new QB

2027: Carr finally comes off the books with a $17.2M cap hit...that number will obviously grow as Mickey needs to restructure his deal to be cap compliant in 2025 & 2026. Again, with Minshew, the team could move on, but with Carr they may need to get creative or actually extend him to minimize the cap hit.

No. When comparing contracts even if you don't agree to take Minshew there is no way that you cannot see somebody's point in favoring Minshew and using the extra $25M on a starting RT & WR3, possibly even an LG to compete.

Minshew looked horrible against us last year for the Colts. To me he is basically Ryan Fitzpatrick. He can have some great games, even string 3 together but he likely is not going to ever be a consistent 17 game season long starter. That said if you appoint him starter going into season, have an OC capable of tailoring a gameplan to his strengths, and use that extra $25M to help surround him with better talent then the argument can definitely be made that could be a better team.

For the record, I'd obviously take Minshew and his contract... But I do think Carr is slightly better. Not by much
