Listened to Hunt Palmer talking LSU practice about DBs

and he was saying they were literally non existent on the field at practice as if Nuss was throwing to receivers who have nobody covering them…
How much water weight does this actually hold? I know he’s an ESPN radio guy and shite, but should we take the wait and see approach or be alarmed?

They getting torched 1v1. In team sessions, they have been winning some battles and being competitive. .

And a lot of the other reports said the complete opposite - when they went to the 11 on 11 portion the defense actually won the practice.
Hunt Palmer is great, but he is a fan. He will give an emotional opinion.

Our corners were bad last year.
We only added corners that have never played college football.
There is no way for the new guys to gain experience without the actual experience. So if the corners from last year didn't improve themselves, I'm not sure why we would wait and see on anything.

From the VERY limited clips I’ve seen the DBs are in decent position but our receivers are making fantastic catches.

Kind of getting tired of his takes
Seems like he is intentionally trying to set the bar low or maybe he is still scarred from last year

I'm okay singling out the corners if you want, but there was little on the airframe that was good.
Fair to say run defense was mediocre-to-bad in 2023 and pass defense was worse?

Or maybe he’s giving an honest real opinion since this is practically the same exact clown show of a secondary as they had last year.
I actually believe him because I’m sure he’s not sugar coating it like most want to do.

and he constantly acknowledges that w/ numerous disclaimers and qualifiers and repeats he is giving his impressions of the day.
he is asked to report his impressions and does so without pronouncing them TRUTH. I like his demeanor, delivery and content and think he's one of the best on BR radio.

And WRs are supposed to win these. They know it’s man with no other defenders. Offense has all advantage in these.

The 1v1’s are to be expected with the talent gap we have at WR and DB right now. It just is what it is. Looking better in team sessions gives me confidence our coaching will have our defense in the right position to succeed. Last year the defense was getting torched in just about every aspect of practice lol.

We know and Hunt acknowledges this every time he speaks on it. The problem is last year it was the exact same thing and people excused it. They do though seam to be improving in 11 v 11 which is what Hunt said yesterday. So that’s a good sign.

According to Scone, offense wins most 1v1s across the board. They should, they’re more talented across the board. But when the defense is winning 45+% of the reps in teams?!? I’ll take it.

I don't see how the secondary can be worse then last season but I would probably lean to Hunt's opinion that there is reason for concern back there.
At a minimum you do bring back some experience at both CB and S so hopefully that will pay dividends.
I do think the scheme should help neutralize some of those weaknesses on the back end but a lot will depend on how much pressure the front can generate and the dline might be more important in slowing down teams so that 3rd down becomes easier for the defense to manage.

It’s the same DBs from the worst secondary in LSU history
Expecting some jump is ridiculous.
It’ll be two years before Corey restocks the secondary back to DBU standards

Could be like 2019 where defense was allegedly getting torched and then it turned out to be the GOAT offense.

Correct
Now change CB to pretty much every position on the field
People's expectations are not based in reality. Future talent at some positions got better, but not enough without experience to get the results that are being discussed.

Based on reports, it sounds like his concerns are warranted when they are doing 2v2 or 1v1, even some 7v7, but when the team goes 11v11, the defense is getting some wins, which is ultimately all that matters.
This defense was never going to be anywhere near great. LSU just needs them to be middle of the pack in the SEC.

You could take the same corners from last year, they could have not improved skill wise at all, and we are substantially better if they just know their assignment.

It would be more concerning if our offense was struggling in those drills.
Thinking our defensive backs won’t improve at all after last year just seems silly.
