Gold Medal Race Final Day

Thought I’d put together an update on SammyTiger’s thread for the final day.
There are 4 events tomorrow that will likely determine the nation with the most golds this Olympics. The U.S. will likely need to win all 3 of its events below to beat the Chinese for most golds.
Schedule:
4:30 women’s weightlifting +81kg
6:00 women’s volleyball final
~6:40 women’s freestyle wrestling 76kg (I think wrestling events start consecutively, so I’m not sure if it will start at exactly this time)
8:30 women’s basketball
Weightlifting:
China’s Li Wenwen is the heavy favorite. If anyone is going to beat Li, it’ll probably be Park Hye-jeong (South Korea) or Emily Campbell (Great Britain), but Li likely isn’t losing unless she misses her lifts.
Volleyball:
Italy is -250 to beat the American women, but last Summer Olympics the Americans upset Brazil to get their 1st Olympic gold in the sport and jump China on the final day.
Wrestling:
America’s Kennedy Blades takes on Japan’s Yuka Kagami. Blades is only 20 years old but is favored to win. Unlike weightlifting though, wrestling matches have more upset potential in them.
Basketball:
America is a big favorite here. I view this as canceling out the weightlifting, so it should come down to wrestling and volleyball.
There are a few women’s cycling events that the U.S. still has a long shot at. I don’t think China is competitive in any of the remaining events except for the near guaranteed weightlifting gold.

Ironic that it could all come down to having to root for the women’s basketball team (a Caitlin Clark-less one to boot), which we all know is this board’s favorite sport.

they should win easily, we’ll be rooting more for volleyball and that badass chick wrestler. What a suplex she put on that big girl.

Remember when one of our athletes had a gold and decided to double down and lost the gold and got a silver instead. Good times.

I didn’t even include High Jump on my list because i didn’t think he could win barring some major upset.
then he won in a major upset and then fricking just threw that away to give the guy who’s better than him another chance to beat him.

I understand the spirit of him going for a sole victor. But consolation with a gold medal wasn't bad at all.

Should have been 2 golds given out. Dude was hardheaded. I sure hope we don’t end up 1 gold short of China because of it.

Missed opportunities
High jump
Mens 4x100
Lyles getting covid
Mens water polo
3x3 basketball should have produced a gold somewhere
Biles faltering in floor
Canoe race that was lost by .01
Climbing wr in bronze medal match, one round earlier and he would have won a gold

A Pole Vaulter that was born, raised, and lives here deciding that since he has no marketable personality to make extra money that he should go compete for another country where he can't speak the language.

You keep saying this but he gave an interview entirely in Swedish, probably still drunk from the night before

We’ve got total medals in a runaway, and if you weight them we’re still #1 by a good margin. This isn’t close.

Very true, but I would still like to at minimum come away with a gold tie. To hell with the dirty Chinese.
