So far I’ve got my flights booked for 4 of us flying outta Dfw - layover in Frankfurt for 3 hrs then into Florence from there. Planning to spend 2 days in Florence. Then train to Rome to spend another 2 days. After Rome we are gonna train down to Naples or Sorrento and make our way to Positano where we have a place booked for 6 nights. Train back to Rome for our flight home. We looked into flying back outta Naples but the cost difference was more than I wanted to shell out. Flight home lays over in Montreal. Booked thru United but the flight there is operated by Lufthansa and Air Canada on the return. Does this seem like a decent itinerary or should I tweak it any way while I still can. I’ve never been to Italy and open to suggestions. Thanks in advance and happy travels.

I would spent more days in Florence and less days in Positano. Positano is extremely beautiful (and expensive), and there is some stuff to do on the Coast...but 6 nights seems like a lot for Positano.

Some people just want to chill though, and I get that. Its crazy beautiful, soak it in.

I certainly would not waste your time on a night in Naples, it is a shithole. Its a day stop at best. If you're doing Positano, you really don't need to spend a night in Sorrento either they are pretty close.

But Florence is my favorite city maybe anywhere. Its really wonderful, I would want 1 extra night at least. Plus if you do extra nights in Florence you could do day trips in Tuscany to the gorgeous countryside towns, hilltop towns, or places like Sienna.

2 nights in Rome is fine imo.

Sounds like you have 12 nights planned?

A balanced trip for that amount of nights would likely be:

4 nights Florence
3 nights Rome
5 nights Positano

?

Something like that.

Have you considered driving instead of taking a train and spending a few nights in a smaller town or two? Or are yall set on taking trains?

Sounds good to me.

Three day trips you can easily take from Positano by ferry:

Capri
Town of Amalfi
Ravello via the Town of Amalfi.

The only negative I see is that arriving in Italy
and seeing Florence and Rome in four days is pushing it.

Thanks for the re replies. Really good stuff. I don’t mind driving but I’d rather trains I think. And I’m going in high season June 22- July 3 I think are our dates. I expect it to be crazy busy. Especially since it’s a Jubilee year. Again I really appreciate the feedback. American Airlines offered nonstops at the same price point but I didn’t mind the layovers on airlines I think would be better for international flights. Idk. I’ve heard great things about Lufthansa and I’ve never seen the Frankfurt airport so I’m good with that part. Florence was a recent addition to the trip that I got the wife on board with (hence the triangle flight ) and I’m more excited for it than I am Rome. Just wish I could spend more time there. My crew is all gung-ho Amalfi coast and wanting to spend the most time there. Wife is already booking capri private boat tours and cooking classes , etc.

I think they will regret this, especially since Florence is the first stop.

Everyone will be jetlagged and you miss most of the first day getting there, so you basically have one full day in Florence, and Florence, to me, is pure magic.

No cars in the main part, romantic, amazing food, one of the best museums in the world, statue of david (in a different museum). Its a really magical city.

I would do what you can to get one more night there. If you can't, thats ok.

Amalfi will be a shitshow in terms of crowd at that point. Very peak season.

But, there's a reason for the crowds, its beautiful.

You have to be careful about booking the Blue Grotto in Capri. If the private boat is taking you from Positano to Capri, that is fine, but if you are taking the ferry, check the time schedules because there are very few per day. Maybe only one there and one back.

We took the ferry there on a beautiful sunny day and the Blue Grotto was closed because of high waves.

I swam in the blue grotto… you have to wait until all the tour boats leave. We stayed 2 nights on the island though so I had more time, rented a moped to go all around the island

We are planning to take one of the earliest ferries. Gonna Spend the day exploring before we do the tour. Our tour is set to end an hour before the last ferry so I’ll def be mindful of coordinating that.

The only advice I have is to avoid Naples all together. In my opinion you will be disappointed that you wasted any time there.

Yeah. The only reason to go to Naples is to use it as a launching pad for the nearby areas such as the Amalfi Coast, Pompeii and Sorento.

Naples

How is the airport? Can you fly out there from the Amalfi coast or is it better to just go to Rome

I have used the Naples airport a few times. It is like a third world airport but it works. For the Amalft Coast I recommend flying in to Naples and being driven to your destination by transferelax.com.

And the reverse to go home.

Thanks I'll look into that. I think we will fly into Florence and out of Naples. Does anyone have any small towns they'd recommend stopping at for a night or two between Florence and the Amalfi coast?

Unless you are flying biz class, there is no appreciable difference. No way I would pass up a direct flight.

Spent 3 days in Florence and 3 days in Rome. We would’ve liked to stay in Florence another day or two and 3 days wasn’t enough to see Rome.

Yeah I wanted to book the direct but that was coming and going from Rome and I really wanted to start in Florence.

Naples is not a shithole and there are reasons to see it. The archeological museum.and Herculaneum are just two of them.

Museum

Herculaneum

One other positive word about Naples.

Pizza.
