The U.S. should ban immigration of all foreign athletes who come to our country, pay U.S. university tuition, pay U.S. trainers, pay U.S. training clubs and facilities to rent, rent apartments from U.S. landlords, and just generally live an American life because we lose a few Olympic events over two weeks of a summer every four years!

Fair point, that makes sense! In relation to OP though, my take is that U.S. being the world’s training ground for athletes (that can afford it or get sponsored) is still a net economic and cultural positive for the U.S. at the expense of a few Olympic medals every few years.

Up until the nli changes and expansion of scholarship limits, outside of basketball, every Olympic sport offered by the ncaa was an equivalency sport, aka partial scholarships. Men's swim teams got a whopping 9.9 scholarships to give out. That spreads real thin between 20+ guys and 3-5 divers. The ncaa champion on my team wasn't even getting a full ride type story, and we were barely top 20 then.

My buddy swam at auburn, on a team that 3peated. Was top 20/25 in the world in his event, not the fastest on his team. Back then auburn was qualifying more athletes for NCAAs than they allowed you to take to the meet. I believe that was an 18 athlete roster max. 9.9 scholarships spreads extra thin with rosters like that. Meaning, this comment is not even remotely correct when looking at the top ncaa teams.
