Gravley mower owners, talk me into/out of one (52" X, XL, or HD)

My old green and yellow has finally passed the point of costing more to keep running than worth it. I've been searching around and like gravelys. Local dealer, seem pretty simple to work on (wide open engine compartments, access to trouble spots, i do 99% of the work on my machines myself so i like this). Looked at JDs and bad boys as well. Cutting ~3 acres total including around two houses. And like ricky bobby, i like going fast...
I've narrowed it down 52" in the X, XL, or HD versions, they sure are proud of them, but i'll buy this for 20 years. The HD version costs more and seems simpler built with less things to break, a little faster, more robust transaxles. The other versions have lights, and don't have as much access to the spindles below deck. All have the kawasaki 23hp.
I've justified the HD in my mind but could be talked out of it.
Thoughts?

I have a 52" ZTHD and have no complaints. Been having it for 2 years and it's been stout. It's probably overkill for my yard but they didn't have the 48" that I planned on getting.
ETA: The deciding factor for me (cause I was deciding between the XL and the HD) was the deck. The HD has a deeper deck. That gives it better airflow and a better cut quality. The HD deck also has larger bolts and deck hangers, and beefier spindles and drive belts.

I've got the ZTXL-42. Had it for probably 4 years now. I bought it as a previous year's display model with 0% financing for 3 years. It has the Kohler engine, but it has been no problem to work on. Just a well built solid machine. The blades aren't difficult to remove/sharpen. The engine oil drain is in a stupid spot, but they all seem to be.
It's WAY more powerful than the 15 year old Dixon it replaced. I've never had it choke on grass no matter the length.

Reason to not buy a Gravely--they're made by Ariens.
I wouldn't mow 2 acres with a 10 gauge deck.
Hydros and engine combinations are all basically the same. You want the best built frame and most heavy duty deck you can get in whatever your slotted price range is.

Have you looked at the Hustler Super Z? I picked one up about a month ago and love that thing. Very smooth and fast

And don't put any stock into the idea that dealer support means anything. Buy the machine as if you never plan on taking it to the dealer again (unless they give you free break-in service or some shite).
Buy a quality machine and maintain it yourself and you'll have no probels. If your machine needs to go back for warranty work (unless it's used commercially) then you bought a piece of shite.

With zero explanation I can’t tell if this is good or bad.

While I don't plan on ever bringing it in, I do like that there’s a local place if I need to get parts if I needed quick. Say I break something in the middle of a cut on a Friday, I can swing buy and pick up a replacement in town instead of ordering.
Damn, where did gravely touch you that you’re so mad at them?

I haven’t. $?
ETA: that’s a $15k machine and a nope.

I have a Gravely ProTurn that I purchased used 4-5 years back. I had to have a couple of spindles replaced but other than that, it's been a joy to operate.
Having a local dealer is great.

Bought a proturn from BMC in Westlake near where I live. Worth it.

Three acres is a bit of a ‘tweener between commercial and residential. I’m running a BadBoy MZ Magnum (residential) on its ninth year of service.
For the first five years, I cut four acres of pretty uneven terrain. Since I bought my new place, I’m only cutting two acres. Other than changing oil and blades, the only things I’ve had to do are replace a front wheel and last year replaced drive belt and spindles. Kohler engine, paid $3499 new when I got it.

I seem to be in minority but had a 60” hd and nothing but problems and local dealer was of little help, got a JD commercial z930 and been very happy with it

I have a 52” Gravely HD with Kawasaki engine. I was looking between Gravely, Hustler, and Bad Boy.
In general, it’s a very solid machine that cuts decent. I wish the cut was a little better, but it’s not bad. I cut a lot and probably should sharpen/replace blades more often than I do.
I’ve read the 52” deck design is poor in comparison. It’s an oddball size too vs a 48/54/60 split. There’s a fair amount of vibration in the deck, but the tensioning system is great. I’d probably recommend a 48 or 60 based on what I’ve read. I’m looking to upgrade to a 60” in a year or two.
If you like to wash your mower, the solenoid on the Gravely is in a bad spot. Mine corroded away one of the prongs and was a PITA to troubleshoot. Also, the Kawasaki randomly bent a pushrod that I wasn’t sure the cause, resulted in me replacing the engine, rebuilding and selling the old one.
It’s also heavy AF. Built like a tank. Which is both good and bad.
I mow 4 acres and have right at 200 hours on mine. I put between 60-70/year. I would still never recommend a full “commercial” machine like you’ll see many people push you to. You just don’t put the hours on it like they do, and it’s not worth the trade off in cost. A decent residential machine will easily last 500 hours (10+ years) with minimal maintenance for much less cost.

Damn, thanks for the long review. This is disappointing.
How important is Kawasaki vs kholer?
LsutigerME, hit me up at coon.td1@gmail.com if you don’t mind.

Almost everyone will recommend the Kawasaki, but it’s not a super critical decision. Both are fairly reliable and similar power. Kawasaki parts tend to be more readily available since there is a stronger preference for them.
Sent you an email as well.

I run a ZTHD 48, but I only cut an acre. Its like hammering a finishing nail with a 12 pound hammer. Its a 2018, and I all I have done is fluids, blades, filters, and one hydro service I did myself, if you are handy at all you can do that as well.
I concur with buy a machine you dont need a dealer for.
When I bought mine I looked around at what the people that use their machines every day use. Here on the Northshore its Gravely by a mile. I bought a Gravely. I'm thrilled with it.
