quote:

But many young adults who don’t want kids don’t fully anticipate the social, $ & emotional realities of childlessness in later life. Staggering stats here from Pew:

Among older childless adults…

?? 72% worry about finances
?? 68% worry about having caregiver when old
?? 56% worry about being lonely

There’s nothing wrong with people not wanting kids. It’s better for everyone if they don’t have them, rather than having kids they didn’t want in the first place.

Children have become unaffordable for the masses. If you aren’t on government assistance or making 6 figures, you’re getting raw dogged.

That's short sighted at best. Same thing happened in Europe and look what they had to import to fill job vacancies.

Not to worry. We’ll just keep importing the Third World to make up for birth rates that are below replacement levels.

Japan has had similar issues. They just don't import replacements.

I tend to be in the Elon Musk/Jordan Peterson camp on parenthood. It’s good for our species, but you have to choose to voluntarily take the role on and take it seriously.

However, I will admit that young people have a bit of a double whammy. As a country gets wealthier, kids become more expensive (in real and opportunity costs) and there are fewer reasons to have them.

Wish people would have more kids, but I understand why people are choosing not to and I wish that weren’t the case.

No they haven’t. There’s just too many financially dumb people that are apart of those masses.

Why as re they breaking it down by 18-49 and then basically 50+?

Seems like a stupid way to do it. First off, significant differences in people ages 18-24 and 45-49.

They should break the stats down into smaller subsets to see the trends. That will be how you get a better understanding.

It’s not only liberal women choosing not to have kids. Just saying.

That’s generally the consensus on here so I wanted to clear that up.

Yeah, not too many people in the 45-49 bracket (let alone 50+) are planning on starting a family

This. The same people dismissing the problem are probably going to be the same ones complaining about rapid demographic shifts and falling GDP as the workforce shrinks over the next few decades.

We need to simplify our lives and prioritize God, Church, family and community over consumerism/individualism.

yea I was about to counter that statement. Since having my daughter I’ve been pleasantly surprised how well off we’ve been. Neither one of us are huge income earners at all (80kish household) and we’re making it work just fine. I know things get more expensive as they grow but we’ll also be in a much better financial situation as our careers progress to handle it.

You don't have to mass import sub 80 iq muslims/ africans to bolster the economy, china has millions of smart young people without behavioral issues
