They were in the ground, not wood. I want to cook them and eat them.

They look to be , but I don’t like the smooth stem , maybe it is just the picture I would have to see in person, chanterelle should have the gills running down the stem and not stop abruptly

My thought exactly. Look for the gills to transition/continue into the stem slightly.

Not sure where you’re located, but a lot of the Chanterelles I see in Atlanta and N. GA look just like yours and do not have ridges that run down the stem.

Split one in half, if the flesh is white you’re good to go.

Yes they’re chanterelles. I picked a bucket full yesterday and mine have the same stem. I tested them for safety in butter and garlic over a ribeye and am still kicking.

The inner flesh of these isn't exactly white. It's white-ish but still a yellow tint.

Idk I'm just not convinced enough yet to eat them.

Just cook them and taste one. You'll enjoy it either way. Good taste or good trip!

99% look like the chantrelles I've found.

Did you do a smell test? Should smell slightly fruity like apricots.

They don't smell all that fruity to me. Maybe a tinge of sweetness, but mostly earthy.

Put them in a paper bag for a bit then open it and smell. If it smells like apricots at all, it's chanterelles. I don't like the look of the transition to the smooth stem.

Take a look at this. LINK

When I have a weird one I go to FB for the Mushroom ID group. They've got some PhD's in there.

They look a lot like Chants, but so do Jack O' Lanterns.

I picked some that look just like this today. They were all on the ground not on rotting wood. Inside flesh is white. Anything else to look for?

Nice!

I'm going to cook my haul tonight.

Meanwhile, I had to take something to someone's house in Bonifay today on my way back to Pcola from Tallahassee for work, and when I pulled out to leave I spotted a whole mess of chants on a bank above a ditch across the street. There was zero doubt about these. They were fruity smelling and very white on the inside. They are popping off in the panhandle.

That’s how they look in my neck of the woods. That’s a beautiful thing!

My season starts the first good rain in September.

Where abouts?

yeah, cool fungus is everywhere right now. I've been seeing boletes everywhere. Also at that disc golf course on perdido bay, there were reishi everywhere. Never seen that many in one place. Usually isolated.

I sautéed some of those chants last night and threw em on some ribeyes. Absolutely delicious. Best mushroom I've ever eaten, by far.

Been raining here all week.
