I’ve stayed here Lotte Palace, with family/kids in the last couple of years and enjoyed it. Great location. Directly behind St. Patrick Cathedral. It’s close to Times Square and the Park and museums w/o being in the fray. Essa Bagel is a fun local place to eat breakfast.

Check out the High Line on the west side of manhattan- it’s an elevated walkway/park on the west side.

So many things. We went two years ago with the kids and loved it.
For Broadway, I’d do Hamilton, Lion King, Book of Morman or Back to the Future
It’s a foodie paradise so go get some NYC pizza and try some cool restaurants . Something neat is they have a city Pizza tour with a guide that you get to try 3 of the best and hear the history.
Walk the Brooklyn Bridge
Go to a Yankees or Mets game
Definitely check out the American Museum of Natural History
Take a boat to the Statue of Liberty
Take a boat to Coney Island
Something neat I did once was a mafia tour. They show you all the hangs of the famous mob bosses and important landmarks.
If you have time just walk around Chinatown and Littly Italy and get some food
See what concerts are in town playing Madison Square Garden or another venue. Maybe one of their favorite artists will be there.
Go to the top of the Freedom Tower in the fastest elevator in the US
So many options. Enjoy

Do not do Book of Mormon with your kids. It’s hysterical, but it’s not something to watch with kids. 
Wicked and Hamilton would be the top 2 to see.

Well I was assuming upper teen agers, lol. I agree it’s the most dicey. Hamilton would be my top choice and I’m a massive Back to the Future fan.

Make sure to bring very summery clothes. It's hot as frick this year.
My personal go-to restaurants (French heavy and mostly West Village / Downtown):
-Minetta Tavern (probably my favorite -- great burgers)
-I Sodi (toughest of the bunch to get into)
-L'Artusi
-Waverly Inn
-Le Gratin
-Raoul's
All of these are on Resy. You can also set notifications for cancellations that open up.
Yall may want to hit up some of the big steakhouses. Wolfgangs on Park is safe bet and my wife took me to Gallaghers which was good. I have yet to go to Keens or Sparks.
Definitely go to Katz for some pastrami sandwiches. Yes, you will think it's expensive, but it is amazing. Lower East Side
ETA: I live near John's on Bleeker now and it does live up to the hype. It is amazing. No slices, whole pizza's only. Lines are crazy sometimes, but actually moves pretty fast.

I haven’t seen Back to the Future. Need to add it to the list.

I don't have much to add as I have only been to NYC twice most recently in early June. The one tip I wish I had was that lots of restaurants don't take credit cards. I tend to never have cash on me and live off my credit card, so it caught me off guard.

Our teens loved Book of Morman but keep in mind it’s from the South Park duo so it’s a bit raunchy. If you like that sort of humor, we thought it was hilarious.

We used to stay at the Conrad Hilton on 54th because the rooms are a suite and offered more privacy if sharing a room with a teen.
Great location being close to CP or Time Square.
Angelos’s Coal Oven Pizza on 57th is one of my favorite pizza places nearby.
Something NYC has that would be new to you is the Highline. It’s an elevated park that is a great family exercise activity. It’s a little over a mile long.
Another must do every trip for my family is the oyster bar inside of Grand Central Station. Super casual inexpensive seafood. Love their clam chowder. The station itself is worth the walk through.

To be fair I don't have much experience, but everyone always says that NYC in July and August is incredibly hot.
So you may strongly consider doing things like matinees and very early dinners, then hitting up some activities early evening.
Basically try to plan early and late outside or walking, and afternoon have an indoor activity.

Hot and cold in NYC I can live with. Not often is it extreme one way or the other, but nothing is worse than being there when it is wet. I hate being in NYC when it rains.

Yeah the air temp might not be too bad but with big cities like NYC it creates a concrete dome.
I saw a meteorologist explain it one time with all the concrete and heat deflecting off the skyscrapers it feels 8-10 degrees warmer on the ground.

We did a walking/subway tour our first day in NYC and would highly recommend it. We got a chance to see a lot in one day got comfortable using the subway. We started Times Square and ended the day at the 911 Memorial after taking the Staten Island Ferry.
