Undergrad and Post Graduate Students

I am 51 years old am starting law school at Loyola in the fall. I was an average student 30 years ago graduating with a 2.6 gpa from SLU in Accounting. Since then, I have done fairly well in my career and my employer is giving me a “full ride” to law school. I was originally worried about how I would compete with these kids coming out of school with 3.5+ gpa’s. After spending some time on the 1L Group Me chat and also listening to questions on the what to expect Zoom that never should have been asked had these kids read the e-mails that were previously sent out I am no longer worried. I will run circles around these young punks and have half of them sucking my knee caps. Rant over.

That is a new one.
Going to school when older is easy if you have the time. You have your priorities in order

As someone who went back to grad school later in life, you’re absolutely right. Professional experience and maturity reveals how easy it is to get through school. Just be responsible and treat it like a job, and you’ll do very well.

I never understood why people have this mindset towards academics. Focus on yourself, old man

Boy do we have different definitions of what constitutes an average student.

How did you get into law school so easily? Did you ace the LSAT?

Life and professional experience make it easier and gives the knowledge context, being a (potentially younger) parent and holding a job while doing graduate school makes it harder.

I went back to school in my forties, did an associates, a bachelors and a masters. I'll be done with my doctorate next year. Academics is easier as an adult than it was as a young buck, chasing tail and getting drunk.

Having worked in higher ed for a little while now, welcome to my life with some, but not all, students.
We will send out very basic instructions to incoming students that should be done without any sort of hiccups, yet a shocking number of students either just don't do what we say or don't understand the very basic instructions. Stuff like, "I don't understand how to log onto the basic learning management system and do the modules."
I think a main issue amongst some college students nowadays is that they'd rather immediately ask for help rather than even trying to figure it out themselves. It's shocking how many just seem helpless and can't even do a google search that would take less than 1 minute to get an answer to their questions.
And this doesn't even touch on the social awkwardness of some students, who stare like they saw a ghost and barely contribute to the meeting they scheduled. I think the pandemic and the stunting of social skills negatively contributed to that.
Of course, there are some superstar students in there that I really like, who are engaging, interesting to talk to, and are on top of their stuff both in and out of the classroom. Those students actually just make the other students, who don't have their crap together, look even worse.

That is great and I wish you luck, but how did you get into Loyola Law School with a 2,6 GPA at Southeastern?

The bar tends to be lower for professionals entering law school versus undergraduates going immediately into law school. Plus it’s Loyola, so…

I aced the LSAT and wrote a killer personal statement.
