Alabama Power tells the 76° AC environmentalists to hold their really hot beer

Alabama Power explains how 20-degree rule impacts air conditioning
quote:
Anthony Cook with Alabama Power says that rule is based on industry-standards for the way most air conditioners are designed. He says your AC unit will typically lower the temperature in your home about 20 degrees from what the temperature is outside;
quote:
Meaning, if it’s 100 degrees outside, most homes will only get down to around 80 degrees.
quote:
Cook says you can set your thermostat for a lower temperature but honestly, it might not help much and you’ll end up spending more money in the long run.
quote:
What it’s going to do is it’s going to continue to run in order to try and reach the temperature of where you set it but it really won’t get it beyond that 20 degree mark and so you’re gonna be wasting energy, which in turn wastes money.”

Ya see......what you need to do is get yourself a couple of $500 window units instead of one crappy $12,000 central unit.

That’s bullshite. On 100° days I can easily keep my house at 72°.

It's been in the upper 90's every day for two weeks in ATL and my AC has zero problem keeping upstairs at 69 (snicker) and downstairs at 72.
Replaced 3 years ago with new Carrier units. Prior to that, the 20 degree rule definitely seemed to be in effect.
Also my power bill is half of what it used to be in the summer.

So my thermostat is lying like a motherfricker?

That's right, it's trying to trick you. Using the power of suggestion, the thermostat is making you feel like it's 72 even though it's really 81. That's what the scientists say. AC simply isn't capable of keeping your house cooler than 20 degrees below outside temps, the Science says.
NEvermind the fact your refrigerator and freezer somehow pull off this feat, this defying physics miracle, on a daily basis, and has been for nearly a hundred years.

I think they’re talking about a single or double wide.

Yea that’s false. 100 degrees today and you could hang meat in my house.

Maybe 30 years ago, but I call bullshite on this.
Last two weeks here it was mid 90's with moderately high humidity and my AC jmhad absolutely no problem keeping my house 67.

Thought that was common knowledge..

Pretty much this, but they don't even have to be $500 window units. I got a couple $150 window units from Walmart a couple summers ago and put them in the windows during summer, and my house stays at 68 all summer while running the main unit sparingly.
FTR I live in the FL panhandle and it's both hot and humid, but running these window units has actually dropped my energy bill. You have to be strategic about their placement and seal them from the outside well, but my house is 2500 sqft and stays cool with my main unit basically only giving an assist to these cheap throwaway window units.
I don't care if window units look white trash sticking out of a nice house, the neighbors can deal with it as long as I have my haven from 100+ degree heat indexes

I think it becomes more of an issue with older units, or just any unit with a lot of run time on it. We saw a ton of posts here last year to back that up, and already a few this year. New(er) units will do it fine, until they don't.

Same. Mine has been 71 all day recently. Even on the hottest days last year (101-103) it wouldn't get much higher than 73 or so.

There’s this thing called insulation he should probably look up

My a/c is still out, but my trashy widow units are keeping my house at 72…
Waiting for my a/c guy to fix it…

I built a walk in cooler that uses a regular window unit AC. I can hold the temp to 34° when it is 95° outside.

I spray foamed my attic. It’ll be 100+ out and I’m holding 72 with ease.

Add a decent dehumidifier to the mix. It makes a huge difference. That's what I ended up doing for my aunt who lives in an old home with just a single window unit. The house is insulated remarkably well. The dehumidifier and a couple floor fans can get that entire house down to ~70° with temps near 100°. She doesn't even keep it that cold, though.
I've learned that you dry the air as much as possible and keep it moving. Last year when I got the new window unit in for her and the fans she called and said it was too cold.

Did you do the ceiling of your attic? Hope you never get a leak in your roof..
My B-I-L sprayed his attic ceiling with spray foam and his roof leaked, the termites loved it.

Tell me more. I want to learn. Make a separate topic on Outdoor or Home Improvment Board if need be, to keep out the riff raff.
