This came after some unexpectedly bad results in an IIHS crash test. If you have one of these on order....be prepared to wait longer.

Toyota has issued a stop-sale on its two largest three-row crossovers, saying it will recall an estimated 145,000 2024 Toyota Grand Highlanders and Lexus TXs because the driver's side curtain shield airbag may not deploy as intended - Autonews

Is the Boeing cultural problem spreading to the once great Toyota company?

I know that they've been having widespread, severe issues with their new line of twin turbo truck and SUV engines. And they were recently caught using false records in Japanese safety tests. This particular recall involves a crossover SUV that has been an incredibly quick seller for them.

Oddly enough the regular Highlanders are not impacted. Only the extended length version and its Lexus counterpart. Glad they are getting ahead of it and trying to fix it though. Safety sells cars, especially crossover SUVs.

This is a rough year for Toyota. Looks like they’ll be doing mass engine replacements for the Tundra beginning soon (they’re supposed to announce their final plan for that soon) and now this.

Toyota is taking a beating. Once legendary reliability and quality to a complete failure of the new engine and now multiple recalls.

They are scaling up production in Alabama to build more engines. They are anticipating having to replace a lot of them.

I suspect that they will not replace ones that don't have any metal shavings in the oil filters or any apparent defects. But they will likely warranty those engines for a very long time.

To their credit, they seem to be trying to fix this. What I thought was avoidance and denial was actually them trying to prep their supply chain and scale up procurement for mass repairs. They didn't manage the crisis perfectly, but they are trying very hard and I appreciate that. I still wouldn't buy this generation Tundra/Sequoia/LX/GX for a few years. But if I already had one, I think Toyota is doing the best they can short of buying all of them back.

But the dishonesty in those Japanese safety tests are very Boeing/Volkswagen-esq. And not in a good way. Both of those companies used to be well respected. They aren't anymore.

They're going to see something similar to VW in my opinion or people will sue them if a buyback option isn't included in that plan.

The first gen Traverse was both ugly and unreliable. The second gen is okay. The new ones are a legitimately good product with an aggressive price structure by today's standards. They'll sell very well.

The Grand Highlander looks like a great product too other than this design issue. They couldn't keep up with demand, and now they can't deliver any.

Seems like these big 3 row crossovers are where the market is focused.

Maybe they should have shared more parts. The regular Highlander had excellent crash tests.

I now they are caught up in a scandal, but so is Mazda. This is specific to the Japanese market.

I've never seen any on the road...

They were, I agree. That was 20 years ago, and looking back at most first generation cars, they usually suck.

A lot of y'all blamed Toyota's problems on government regulations. But I think there is a cultural shift happening there that may be responsible for rushed development and improper manufacturing processes - or at least more issues in those areas than we are accustomed to from Toyota.

I'd still get one over a Stellantis, Nissan, or VW product. Not so sure I'd rush to get a brand new Toyota design over a similar Ford, GM, Subaru, or Honda though. Depends on the vehicle I guess.

ETA: I'm a current 4Runner owner, and I am a huge fan of the new Lexus GX and their other mid sized Trucks/SUVs. I'd buy one of those after they work out the kinks. I can't stand their full sized trucks and SUVs though. They need a major redesign or update. I'd look at GM or Ford for full sized trucks/SUVs.

Nah, the forklift stuff effected the American plant in Indiana they went a year+ without being able to deliver a propane lift and still have some diesel models haven’t passed

Something to do with their engine emissions testing being done in Japan and fudging numbers

Correct. Nicer paint and leather isn't really worth the extra price for me. I'd have to REALLY like the Lexus styling to spend more for what's basically the same vehicle.

There are not many Lexus products that don't have a very closely related Toyota counterpart. The ones that do are very nice though. They have a two door coupe that looks amazing.

Not defending them but I cant imagine how much BS there is in government regulations when it comes to building a vehicle for the US.
