I set them up like a football on a tee, and kick it, and see which one doesn’t break when I kick it.

Off the vine? When the tendrils (“curly grabby things” like a cucumber vine) near the fruit begin to dry up and also when the belly is bright yellow.

lol
There were a lot of good suggestions…
Yell/gold bottom
Defined Webbing(two finger wide)
Dull green
Brown stem ( not green)
Hollow thump
Little heavy for size
No soft spot on end opposite stem
Non dominant hand on one end and two finger slap on other end… and crisp solid energy transmission through melon..

Sure there were others .. but these are the ones I will try to remember.

I asked some old baw in Sam’s how to pick one. He had overalls on so I trust him. Said you want to push and squeeze it. Firm is good, if it has some give, no good

As long as it's a Sugartown melon, all good.

Wrong. Most types of watermelon are naturally long.

Look for:

Yellow spot
Low thump sound
Brown/dry stem

Ate one today, was not impressed, was harvested too early, also that area had a lot of rain late in the growing season which is not good
