This place just opened where Velvet Cactus closed on Old Hammond. If anyone goes let me know what you think of it. I’d like to try it soon

The fusion between Texas and Mexican cuisine…never heard of that. Not sure they go together, but I’ll wait and see what others say. I’m not adventurous enough to try that combination first.

I used to tear these up when I was a kid!
It was always a highlight of my parents going out for an "adult night."

My family went on saturday to try it out. They are not serving alcohol until they get their permit. We ordered the elote app, traditional tacos and the tuna tostadas. The elote fine, it didnt really feel authentic or hav a ton of flavor, it was just decent. The tuna tostadas were excellent, but my only complaint was the heat. They must use a bunch of wasabi in the recipe because they were very spicy. Nthing special about the traditional tacos, however the wife did say they were very spicy as well. Salsa was good, rice and beans were good.
With a few asian inspired dishes they should have marketed it to more of an asian mexican fusion not tex mex.
As far as the layout and construction, its practically the same layout as Velvet Cactus, they added some beams to the outdoor patio. The "pond" is still drained and they said there is still work to be done there and there is plans to add a sound wall to block the noise from Old Hammond. It looked like they were ready to open and it is going to be a work in progress.
Servers and staff were very attentive and asking how the food is and eager to talk about the business. I hope they do well, there are very few places in the city with a patio and good food.

I think they'll do just fine with the history of the leadership they have running the place.

Without reading any responses this was my first thought
Damn, I ate many of these as a kid
ETA; Y.A. beat me to it, good times and those things probably cost under a $1 back then.

No labeling that the shrimp/crayfish are imported. Probably going to ask when we eventually go once alcohol is available.

I met the owner a few months back. My family and I had to attend a memorial service just up the road. The owner allowed us to park, they had a shuttle take us to the service.
I too am ready to try it. The owner told me a little what he planned to do, sounded great.
Y. A. had lunch yesterday with our cousins.

A Mexican restaurant in BR that can't serve margaritas to the soccer moms.
I hope they get that license quickly.

How long does it typically take? Is our government usually speedy when it comes to that?

I'm here now. Just talked with the owner. They are hopeful it's a go for booze this weekend, but call first. Started with Fajita Steak Queso, the beef is very good, cooked to perfection. I had the Fajita Steak Tacos, also very good. The Charro Beans were very, very good. Rice as also good. For the chaser Flan. All in all, very good. The owner and his wife, enjoyable to talk. The staff very attentive.

Mrs. BTB and I just ate there for lunch. Very nice inside. The velvet (ironic) furniture is a very nice touch, but I'd be shocked if kids didn't destroy in within a month. Happy they finally got ride of that overpriced artwork that was in it previously. Not sure why anyone thinks that they'll be able to make a living selling their artwork through restaurants like that. Manager and owner (I'm assuming) both came by to talk a few times. The permit to get alcohol had to take time because the neighborhood behind the restaurant has noise issues, and that is something that was addressed when it was formerly Velvet Cactus. Should be up soon. They also joked about how people will think it's funny that Asians are running a Tex-Mex restaurant. Patio area doesn't have their plumbing set up to run the fountain. Not sure what the plan is there, but that's a pretty scenic spot to enhance the patio itself. Inside also had a projector facing the kitchen which I do not remember existing previously. Maybe they'll have it used for gameday viewing? I should've asked more questions but I wasn't going to bother them on how they run their restaurant.
As for the food, we did elote, chimichanga, two tamales and one enchilada. Lunch portions were fairly large. Elote was great and mixed with chips. Hard to eat by itself because we only got a fork and knife. Salsa was good. Not chunky but still a little thick. Was not warm but not freezing cold. The red sauce on the chimichanga had some bite to it which took me by surprise but it was enjoyable. Rice fluffy and filling. I don't care for refried beans but thought they were fine.
We were the only ones for a few minutes but it picked up about 15 minutes in. Staff was very attentive. Forgot to mention but as soon as we parked our cars, the front of house was getting menus ready as they saw us walking.
Definitely looking to try other menu items on there next time we go and hopefully they have margaritas ready to roll out as well.

Same here, but I love Charro Beans, so I told them to give me Charro's instead.

Got a text a few days ago, they have the liquor license. Been too busy to post. I'll hit the place up again, next trip to BTR.
