From CJJ presser, "If Jones or Herring are top 50 picks I will tell them to go pro"

From his presser today.
He said if either guys get picked top 50 he will advise them to go pro.
But he also said, he has talked to Bear Jones about making next years team his team and his lineup. CJJ thinks Jones value will sky rocket even higher if he stays another year.
For Herring he said if he returns he will be a weekend starter. He is very high on Herring and mentioned he is one of the best pitchers he has ever had. CJJ said if Herring returns he thinks Herring will go down as one of the best ever pitchers in LSU history.
Here's a couple more tidbits.
Braswell, Pearson, Loer and Ulloa will be welcomed back with open arms. CJJ loves what each of those guys brings to the table and is hopeful they will return.
Jay seemed pissed to me (but he didn't say he was) about the 3 players looking him in his eyes and saying they would return only to get phone calls from them the following week. He tried to say he has to learn how to be ok with that in this new world of college baseball. (Those 3 may have burned their bridge even though I was hopeful C Johnson would return)

Jay also said Paxton Kling could become a player like Dylan Crews. Jay also said, while LSU was sitting at 3-12 in the SEC, that LSU would be in first place in any other conference in the country.
Let’s tone down the hyperbole, please.

I don't see Bear or Herring as Top 50 so . . . welcome back!

Outside of the ACC, I still don't think he was wrong about that.

I'm pretty sure they are going anyway if they are drafted in the top 50

And his team went toe to toe with the ACC champ only losing in extras in game 3.
So was he wrong?

Yeah. Jones is #119 on MLB as a prospect. Herring is #156

We “went toe to toe” with a lot of SEC teams that beat us. We lost.
And we lost to UNC.

I don't think he can do much more to improve his stock.
Simply not being in a draft class with Caglione and Condon will improve his draft stock.

He's a R/R first baseman. He doesn't have any stock. He can't improve his draft stock. He can improve the likelihood of success once he gets to the minor leagues though.
For some guys, the draft apparatus just doesn't place a ton of value on you. R/R 1B is the lowest category of player. But once he's actually in the minor leagues, all bets are off. The way things go for most players, by staying around another year at LSU he's at the very least guaranteeing and extra year of baseball in his career.
But he can improve things that will help him down the road and make it more likely that he sticks around in the minor leagues and hopefully one day in the majors.

He said “any other league” asshat.
At 13-17 in our league we took the ACC champ down to the wire. I don’t see anything false about anything he said.

I don’t disagree with your statement, but Jay didn’t exclude the ACC in his comment.
He’s made a lot of “this guy is the best I’ve ever coached” or “he’s the best in the country”.
During the regional said Gage Jump was the top pitcher in the country.

I mean technically yes. We went 1-2 against the #1 team in the ACC, so you can assume that we would not be the #1 team in the ACC. But to further prove the point, we went 2-1 against Texas A&M and I wouldn’t say we were overall better than Texas A&M.
If he would have excluded the ACC as well as the SEC I would be much more tempted to agree with him.

Griffin Herring had an 1.79 era this season.
He could very well be one of the best pitchers in LSU history if he does something like that as a starter.

Yes we did. Also it doesn’t prove that he was wrong either.

idk we were right there with UNC and the format favored them in game 4 vs game 5 for us.

Do you realize how good some of the best pitchers in LSU history were? I love Herring and would love for him to return next year. But he’s got a long way to go if he’s going to crack the top 10 of all time LSU pitchers.

CJJ addressed this in his press conference as well. He said everybody thought he had fallen down and hit his head when he said it.
Today he said he was wrong but only wrong by two outs. He was alluding to how we came up short against the #1 Acc team by only two outs. It's almost like he was directing that right at your remark.
