BATON ROUGE - Two children who were hit by a car Monday afternoon in the University Club neighborhood were taken to a hospital.

First responders said the incident happened just before 7 p.m. along Memorial Tower Drive. The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident. Deputies said the victims ran out in the street in front of a car.

Both of the children were taken to a hospital, one with serious injuries and another in stable condition.

First a drowning, now this.

When I was little my parents taught me early and often not to play in the street

But you drive through neighborhoods these days and kids all over the streets

Consequence of tiny lots with no backyards

Yes, it is.

Supposedly (according to FB), these two children ran in front of a vehicle.

That's the opposite of what I've experienced. Growing up, kids were seemed to be everywhere--streets, front yards, woods, train tracks etc.

Now you barely see any kids outside.

It’s either little kids that are unsupervised running in front of a vehicle, or the vehicle was hauling arse through the neighborhood.

Rarely are kids run over in a neighborhood like University Club. I doubt little kids were running around their front yard unsupervised, so my money is on a speeding or distracted driver.

Kids don't hang out in the street here, but it's a hilly neighborhood and seeing 7-8 year olds zooming down hills where cars regularly speed and often can't see over the crest freaks me out.

I try to remember we did dumb stuff and lived - but obviously different when you're on the other side of it.

There will be a lot of kids for the rest of the summer that won't be allowed within 50' of the road or a pond. Kids do stupid things but fortunately for all of us as parents and kids once the majority of the time we get away with it needing nothing more than Bactine and a bandaid.

I’m sure there are a ton of rumors but I heard the girls were walking home from swim team practice and it was a hit and run.

Plenty of cameras. But gate check in is from dusk to dawn.

I’ve heard nothing of hit and run

It was in front of that grassy lot that is adjacent to the tennis courts and gym facility. There was a row of cars parked on the side of the street along the tennis courts. Best I can figure they came into the street between some cars.

I think it’s great that kids that live in UC can roam the neighborhood like I did in back in the 90’s. That being said, it was only a matter of when, not if, something like this was going to happen. Kids roam the neighborhood like I used to but have zero awareness of their surroundings. I’ve had to slam on my breaks because a kid ran in front of me in the very same area. Wasn’t speeding, wasn’t driving recklessly, just going down the street and someone pops out between cars parked along the side.

I think you probably underestimate how many cars had to do that for you (and all of us) as a kid.

Kids are going to be kids. IMO drivers are more distracted than they were 20 or 30 years ago.

That and the parking lot was being re painted. Everybody had to park on the street which made it a mess over there yesterday.

Same here. We were always fricking off in the street on bikes and such in the 90s. Nobody driving had their face glued to a cell phone, though. Not saying the folks were right for letting their kids play in the street just saying now it seems like it'd be an even higher priority with so many distracted drivers.

I’ve turned into a “get off my lawn” guy yelling at cars who speed down my street. It’s so dangerous the speed some people drive, without a care for anything or anyone but themselves.
