Mid-July with grown kids & their kids (six ages 4-14), staying at a house just outside Maggie Valley for a week. Planning Dollywood one day; open to other suggestions. Not averse to a couple of day trips (in addition to Dollywood) of 1-2 hours away. Light hiking, swimming holes, tubing, restaurants…?

Take Hwy 276 to Brevard; there are several trails to waterfalls off of it. Sliding Glass Falls is on 276 as well as the Cradel of Forestry - small museum & hiking trails.
Stop by the Pisgah Ranger Station for recommendation of hikes.

Lake Junaluska is worth a look; just drive around it. There is a motorcycle museum in Maggie Valley the American Pickers went to. It’s cool if you like old stuff.

Stayed in Maggie Valley in Nov (kids 3,4,9). Hiked a new trail almost every day. Was a good central spot to explore different areas.

If flying in to Asheville, and don't mind a drive off the direct path, Sky Top Orchard was a great experience after a flight.

The Biltmore in Asheville is awesome for all ages. Need at least 1 day. Anakeesta in Gatlinburg wasn't great for the $. We found the RMRR to just be meh, but to each his own (several took good naps on the train).

In Maggie Valley, Pops Butts on the Creek was great BBQ and the pancake place was a fun breakfast spot. SoCo Falls is short, and close by. Steep, but do-able for all ages. Did the museum and shops in Cherokee - not worth the time IMO. Do more in the national park.

Dine and shop in nearby Waynesville, the Sweet Onion is a favorite, reservations are helpful, your kids will love the Mast General Store. Waynesville has Friday night street dances and a lot of other fun activities. Check out the 10 Acre Garden in Canton (about 7 miles from Waynesville) in the summer they have outdoor movie nights. LINK

Raft with NOC, the Upper Pidgeon is a good trip of younger kids and it's really close to Maggie. Ducky rentals are a lot of fun if your group can paddle. The Natahala is also a good rafting trip. LINK

Sliding Rock on Highway 276 is great but will be very crowded especially on weekends, arrive early if you can. We usually take a day to drive, hike, and picnic in this area. Looking Glass Falls is beautiful and Moore's Cove is over a big cave that you can go in. Brevard is nearby and another quaint town to explore - look for the white squirrels.

Devils Courthouse and Black Balsam Knob on the Blue Ridge Parkway are hikes with amazing views. We usually have a Blue Ridge Parkway day and have lunch at the Pisgah Inn - reservation here are helpful.

In Maggie Valley check out the Wheels Through Time Museum. Great collection of old cars and motorcycles.

Get there early, parking can be an absolute bitch there.

To OP, Maggie Valley itself is pretty boring, but you're in a good spot to drive to all the good spots. Maggie Valley is the only place outside of the national park where I've seen elk roaming around.

Haywood Smokehouse in Waynesville is a solid BBQ place.

Take a walk around Lake Junaluska.

If you're a slow driver on the Parkway, please use the pulloffs to let people get around you.

If you get up and over there early enough around 6 or 7am, elk are usually hanging around the Oconaluftee Visitor Center just outside of Cherokee.

I second this. You can easily spend a few hours in there checking stuff out.

Add Sliding Rock to this- a natural waterslide. Water is frigid regardless of the calendar; I went in August and it was in the 50s.

I agree with this; it might be better in the fall but we rode it in July. It’s worth doing once I guess but it wouldn’t be a high priority for me.

I did like the toy train museum that was included with the cost of the train ride.
