Jose Ortiz is riding Honor Marie in the Belmont. He’s donning the purple and gold with LSU on it!!

While I love the free publicity that the majority of the country will recognize, it ain't meant for the LSU we know and love.

Our Story
The Sarf family has been in the horse racing business since 1987. Larry and his wife, Leslie, went on their first date to Belmont Park in 1967! Through the years, they owned 15 horses and won 2 New York State bred stakes in a row: Quiet Ruler (2002) and The Mohawk (2003). In the 1990's, they won the Toboggan with Blare of Trumpets. They have been long-time racing fans and they are now recently back in the game with 10+ horses. On July 8, LSU Stables won the Grade 1 Belmont Derby Invitational with Far Bridge. Larry, Leslie, and their son, Randy, play a big role in the purchasing of their horses.

So im guessing Larry or Leslie (L) Sarf (S), but where's the U come from?

I think their son. Question came up during the derby

How can “LSU” combined with purple and gold not be some kind of brand infringement.

Thank you for the explanation and info.

We go through this every big race. It has nothing to do with LSU.

That was not a great rendition of New York, New York.

LSU is the acronym for the stable name. By choice their color silks are P&G, possibly their favorite colors. Unless they used the Tiger head logo on the silks then there’s no infringement

My daughter was very upset. She loves Frozen. She said “that was caterwauling! Daddy that was terrible. Why not just play Frank Sinatra!”
She’s 10. I won parenting.

Trademark law is a bit murky but a case could certainly be made using P&G in conjunction with the letters L-S-U would toe the line.
Question would be if it's worth our time to fight. If they were creating negative press or putting the university in a bad light in any way I'm sure we'd try to put an end to it.

Wrong.
LSU AD almost has to write a C & D to preserve its rights here or it allows dilution of the value.

Yep. Guaranteed if I start mass producing and selling LSU T shirts purple and gold it would get shut down with the quickness
