Agostini said she thought Kane was joking when he announced the contents of the safe.

"Once I seen the actual dollars … and the security ribbons, I lost it," she said.

Kane said they contacted the NYPD because he thought there may be some "legalities" involved. Because the owner of the safe, which was likely stolen, could not be identified, Kane and Agostini said police allowed them to keep the saturated stash.

"I guess the finders keepers rule has worked for us," Kane said.

Kane told NY1 that he and Agostini started magnet fishing because they were bored during the coronavirus pandemic.

Although they made a huge haul with their magnet and rope, the couple faces a long road ahead before cashing in.

"The money would deteriorate more with touch," Agostini said of the water-logged bills.

Their next step, they said, is to take the crumbling money to the Treasury Department in Washington, D.C., where they believe it can be reconstructed.

Yet the ole baw will still have to pay taxes on his find. Probably around 30%. Will cost him about $30K. I would still be okay with taking home around $70K.

Government still gets their greedy hands on the taxes.

Those are the newer (10 years or less) bills. Hopefully the Treasury can verify a good portion of them

They would have never known about it, if it were I. After I thumbed through them for trackers, of course. I've seen No Country for Old Men.

You really have no choice if you want to turn that into actual dollars. You're not going to be able to spend that anywhere. You need the serial numbers looked into and you get clean cash to spend. Of course it will come with a 30% tax.

I agree except I'm guessing they couldn't exchange the bills due to their condition so they had to contact the authorities

Sounds fishy. Pun intended. Why is someone throwing a safe there? Stolen? If you stole it, why throw it away? I think they mentioned that they found more than one there. What is it, a safe graveyard?

I feel like this a trap story to have the feds watch the comments to find high net worth individuals claiming such nefarious things as concealing the find.

$100k isn’t worth a NYC drug lord’s time to try to recoup

100k is barely worth an OT rando’s time in 2024, much less a drug lord.

Can somebody post the specs of this baws magnet? It must be pretty powerful to fish out even a small safe like that one.

Damn that money looks rough for being the new bills. I never understand people who find stuff like this and call the police. 9 times out of 10 they are gonna take it. Just keep your mouth shut and be happy.

Yeah at first I was thinking what idiots they were for reporting it to the police. But if they have to have the treasury salvage the bills then they did what was necessary.

When I was a teen I lost a wallet in our garden and found it a year later. had about $80 dollars in it but they were all stuck together and decaying. Sent the whole thing in to the treasury and got all (I think) my money back.
