MTV News Report on their then-upcoming new album, Down On The Upside, which was released on this day, May 21st, 1996.
Very ominous interview, sad

Might be my favorite Soundgarden album

I was a bit disappointed in this coming off of Superunknown and Badmotorfinger, both of which are among the best albums of that era. There's still a lot of good stuff on this album and its pretty good overall, just not as good as their previous two.

It’s a little less intense and hard. I think that’s why I like it the most Maybe

Pretty Noose is a helluva opener albeit kinda depressing now since Cornell's passing. It's held up as well or better for me than all their hits, and this album had several good ones.

DOTU reminds me of Alice In Chains' self-titled album released than a year prior in that both sound darker and weirder though not as heavy as their previous albums. Both having great deep tracks.

Speaking of deep tracks, i recently learned that Tighter & Tighter was written during the Superunknown era. I think they were smart to push it to this album, but that's just crazy to me considering what they already had.

I'll wait for someone to chime in saying Badmotorfinger puts everything else they did to shame.

Its about even with Superunknown for me but those are different sounding albums. They are easily the two best albums Soundgarden ever did.

I don’t think any of you are watching the video because I think y’all would have something to say about it.

You can't go wrong with any of the 3 from that run. Louder Than Love is great as well.

People understandably probably got sick of BHS and Spoonman getting overplayed on the radio and MTV, but Superunkown is the perfect balance of their older, heavier sound and what they pivoted towards.

I remember the day i bought Superuknown on cassette and being floored but even moreso the anticipation for picking up this CD a couple years later while on summer vacation. My dad had no idea why it was such a big deal, but it was the biggest part of the trip for me.

I was unemployed when that album came out, so I didn't get a copy of it until a year or two later. I liked Pretty Noose when it came out, but it's kinda hard to listen to now - half the time I skip that one. Rhinosaur is a great song. It's a solid album, but it's no Badmotorfinger or Superunknown.

I've watched it in the past but just did again as a refresher, and their breakup less than a year later seems less shocking put into context with that. My hometown didn't even allow MTV on cable so I rarely saw any stuff like it back then.

Still not sure why my folks let me go to Lolla '96 to see them and Metallica among others.

I like it as much as the other two mentioned. Probably a little better than Superunknown. I hate that fricking song Spoon man passionately.

Badmotorfinger is my favorite, but it doesn’t put anything else they did to shame.

If you're talking about his (ETA: Cornell's) comments about "Pretty Noose", why don't you say something about it, my guy?

Rhinosaur is a great song.

This is the first song that comes to mind when I think of that album weirdly enough. Good song.
