Lot of hype when he went first in draft

Why is this even worthy of a question? It was settled nearly 30 years ago he was a bust
Although Tampa fricked him by moving him to DE as a rookie

So did anyone try to move him back to LB?

He was someone that needed better friends.

Football took its toll on Keith.
He had nearly 3 dozen surgeries on his body. Including knee surgery 2 days after Tampa drafted him.
Got hooked really bad on the pain killers.

What a dumb question. A top 5 linebacker/DE with less than 200 career tackles and less than 15 career sacks and 4 teams in 5 years.
Defensive Ends and Linebackers taken in 1st round in 1990/Career tackles/career sacks/Ints/FF/FR/TDs
4th - Keith McCants - 184 tackles/ 13.5 sacks / 1 Int / 0 FF / 6 FR / 2 TDs
5th - Junior Seau - 1522 tackles / 56.5 sacks / 18 Int / 11 FF / 18 FR / 1 TD
8th - Chris Singleton - 287 tackles / 7 sacks / 2 Int / 2 FF / 5 FR / 1 TD
11th - Anthony Smith - 190 tackles / 57.5 sacks / 0 Int / 11 FF / 7 FR / 1 TD
12th - James Francis - 512 tackles / 33.5 sacks / 11 Int / 11 FF / 8 FR / 3 TDs
13th - Percy Snow - ? 2 sacks / 1 Int -injured after rookie season
14th - Renaldo Turnbull - 220 tackles / 45.5 sacks / 1 Int / 9 FF / 7 FR / 0 TD
15th - Lamar Lathon - 414 tackles / 37.5 sacks / 4 Int / 8 FF / 6 FR / 1 TD
18th - Tony Bennett - 397 tackles / 64.5 sacks / 0 Int / 19 FF / 6 FR / 3 TDs
With the exception of Percy Snow (who was injured off the field after making the all-rookie team) all of the linebackers and DEs taken after him had better careers with the pick after him being a hall of famer and Turnbull being first team All-Pro.

Missed out on a HOF in Seau- hindsight

This.
I actually chatted with Keith a lot on social media. He wasn't bitter but said the professional football machine chewed him up and spit him out. He did get addicted to pain killers and battled that a long time.
He did say his move to DE was a mistake but in the NFL you play where they tell you to play. He seemed like a really genuine down to earth dude.

There was a lot of hype because BAMA was sending incredible LBers into the NFL with Wayne Davis, Cornelius Bennett, and Derrick Thomas dominating the college scene and in the NFL. It was easy to anticipate more greatness for McCants. Injuries have stolen a lot of dreams but when he was healthy he was a beast.
