when your offseason move of signing Cousins signaled win now to everyone.
And this is the difference between trying to build a program and trying to win the media’s approval on draft night. Who gives a shite about how sports writers and fans interpret your “signals.” I was in an uproar myself until I calmed down and rationally looked at the numbers.
No one player except at QB was going to drastically change the Falcons. I’d much rather try a manageable approach to securing the QB position than end up having to trade 3 first round picks in a future draft to get a QB who is just as big of a gamble as Penix. They gave up zero picks to acquire Cousins (other than the boneheaded tampering issue) and stayed put at 8 to get Penix. This isn’t some massive program defining decision if it doesn’t work out perfectly.

You’re right at that middle dip part currently.

You're assuming the falcons, who just missed the playoffs in a bad division with a bad defense that just paid an old qb with a torn Achilles AND used their 1st rd pick on a qb will be a "playoff contender in 2026" with a qb that will be 26 with most likely little to no nfl game experience?
There's assumptions then there's the foolishness you posted.

Investing in QB2 is a smart strategy. Investing in QB2 with the 8th pick and the 4th best QB in the draft isn’t.
With age and a pair or acl tears to boot

You’re trying to talk to a bunch of sheep. As soon as a narrative is set in motion the sheep all accept it in lockstep and that’s the end of their “thinking.” It’s sad.

Shouldn't have signed Cousins if Penix was that high on their wish list. Could have beefed up their suspect defense and signed Minshew
Exactly. Either move by itself is defensible. It's the moves in combination that are what is so head-scratchingly bad.

There is no rational argument for why a team should drop 100m+ on a QB and then draft a QB in the top 10. Even if Penix turns out to be a great QB, it's a dumbass pick

How can someone continue to double down on so much wrong lol

idk i think 25 million in dead cap in year 3 isn’t great for their cap.

yeah exactly
it basically negates the advantages the falcons have of a QB on a rookie contract

You do realize there is a likely scenario where Cousins is a bust AND Penix doesn't pan out. Then the Falcons have wasted $100 million and a first round draft pick.
The odds of his move being disastrous are much greater than it working out like you describe.

What if Penix sucks?
Most first round QBs do.
Most first round QBs do.

That would be ironic

Cousins is as close to a sure thing at QB as you can find in free agency, especially for the first few years of the contract where the guaranteed money is. Opportunities to get someone like him without giving up draft picks or players are extremely rare. Could he get injured? Sure. But he’s been as healthy as they come for nearly all of his career and an achilles isn’t like shoulder, back, or elbow surgery.
Plus, by your logic, if you think Cousins is “likely” to bust, then doesn’t it make sense to go ahead and draft his replacement?

Of course the success rate for QB’s in the NFL is abysmal. But you have to try. Should the Chiefs have not drafted Mahomes since they had just signed an aging Alex Smith to a big contract?

Even more 2nd-7th round QBs suck. So I guess your logic is to not draft QBs. Ever. Because most will suck.

Its not terrible either. And if Penix is clearly ready after year 1, and they are fortunate enough to not need Cousins, they can absorb the entire cap hit in year 2 and move on.

I hope Atlanta keeps Terry Fontenot forever. He's giving Atlanta a proper fisting and he's got their fans thanking him for it.

It was a stupid pick at that position.
If they wanted Penix as the successor to Cousins, fine. But trade back and get an extra pick or 2. Penix would have been there 10-12 spots later.

Not to mention, Penix will be 25-26 at the earliest when he takes the reins. It’s a bad pick
And let’s not forget he has a pretty significant injury history

In other words, he basically said that they do not expect cousins to start every game this upcoming season Due to injury
Which makes his contract even more idiotic.
Of you are the GM do you pay that money to a guy who you don’t think will play a full season? Not unless you are stupid.
