Data shows it’s not that overstated. Happy 24th birthday to Mike though, his birthday is in a few days.

The only way that situation works out is if Cousins is a complete bust.
Atlanta either threw away $180 million, or they threw away a first round draft pick. That's the best case scenario.
Terry Fontenot is doing a great job over there.

I figure he will be the starter due to a season ending injury to Cousins (which at this point has been paid and don't give a shite) about game 3 or 4 and he plays well for a few weeks.
He even has Atlanta in the "playoff" talk about week 12-13, then he crashes like most rookies. After team has some film and the realize what they are up against.

Not a Saints fan.
It was braindead any way you look at it.
The fact that people are coming up with all sorts of ways to justify it is enough evidence.

You see everything the Texans are doing? They are absolutely legit superbowl contenders this year, year 2 of Ryans’ tenure.
They are able to do this, exactly as the 49ers have been able to do this, because they are taking advantage of the rookie QB salary advantage.
The Falcons completely pissed that away, BUT had every opportunity to so just that.
They went the traditional route and paid a veteran. You can’t have it both ways.

Using the 8th pick for a QB after making a huge deal for a QB in the offseason seems like an oddity to me.
Full time starters and all pro level players are available at pick 8.
4 other QBs had already been taken.
Falcons needed help on defense.
Could have had Dallas Turner to increase sacks, a corner, something.
I would have rather had Bowers to deploy two TE sets.
Maybe Penix becomes an NFL hall of famer, but for today, I think the falcons missed an opportunity to improve their team.

Shouldn't have signed Cousins if Penix was that high on their wish list. Could have beefed up their suspect defense and signed Minshew
Or trade a 5th round pick for Fields, and spend Cousin's $180 million on defensive players.

This is definitely a sit and learn year for Penix assuming cousins returns to form and stays healthy

The GM just doubled down at the QB position and then decided to double down on once-fired DC Raheem Morris, sporting a 21-38 all-time head coaching record. What could happen?

The Texans got incredibly fortunate to have a QB who played pro bowl caliber his rookie year. Most 1st round QBs become busts. Even fewer are ready from day 1. For every Stroud there are 3+ Fields, Zac Wilson, etc who tank teams for 3-4 years waiting on development that never happens. The Falcons view the Mahomes/Rodgers/Love model as higher % odds, with a dice roll on their future and a solid starter in place if the odds don’t work out.

Nice hindsight 20/20 logic. If only every team could recover from their top 5 QB pick being a bust with the last pick of the following draft being a pro bowler. That is a great sustainable model for other teams to follow. Just win the lottery with a 7th rounder as your star QB.

Cousins will never make 17 games
Penis will be the starter by the end of the year

The whole point of this thread is to show that the Falcons will never actually spend 180 million. And these are billionaire owners. All that matters is how it affects the salary cap, which is very manageable with both on the roster until Penix is ready.

I was not a fan of this at all but after hearing the GM on an interview it makes perfect sense
He said a stat that was very alarming to me
He said that between week 9 and above, at any given time during the 2nd half of the season, 30% of starting QBs in the league did not play games. That number is just crazy to me.
In other words, he basically said that they do not expect cousins to start every game this upcoming season Due to injury

Which emphasizes how ridiculous it was to use that draft capitol on that pick when your offseason move of signing Cousins signaled win now to everyone.

Investing in QB2 is a smart strategy. Investing in QB2 with the 8th pick and the 4th best QB in the draft isn’t.
